Disclosed is a method for regulating the filling of an internal combustion engine to which a combustion air mass flow is fed. Said combustion air mass flow is regulated by a first and a second actuator which are triggered regarding the position thereof. The second actuator is disposed downstream of the first actuator within the air mass flow and has a final upper position in which said actuator is open to the maximum and a final lower position in which the second actuator is closed to the maximum. The actual rotation speed of the internal combustion engine is detected while a set point intake pipe pressure is predefined for triggering the first actuator. The set point intake pipe pressure is determined by means of an rpm-related characteristic map in which the set point air mass flow is not taken into account as long as the second actuator is not located in the final lower position. The set point intake pipe pressure is limited to a minimum value of the intake pipe pressure, which can be obtained in the current set point air mass flow by means of the second actuator that is placed in the final upper position.

The activation of a swirl control valve which is seated downstream of a throttle valve in the intake tract of an internal combustion engine is diagnosed. The swirl control valve is activated by a specific adjustment travel within a supercritical operating range of the intake pipe pressure in the intake tract downstream of the throttle valve. If a specific jump in pressure that is dependent on the adjustment travel does not take place in the intake tract downstream of the throttle valve, a defect in the actuation of the swirl control valve is diagnosed.

An internal combustion engine having cylinders with injection valves and air mass-setting actuators, an air/fuel ratio sensor detecting the ratio in the individual cylinders, and a sensor detecting a torque generated in the individual cylinders or differences in the torques generated in the cylinders includes individually determining the air/fuel ratio for each cylinder, individually correcting an activation of the fuel injection valve for each cylinder as a function of the detected air/fuel ratio and of a desired value of the air/fuel ratio, determining the variable characterizing the torque or the differences in the torque for each cylinder, individually correcting an activation of the air mass-setting actuator for each cylinder as a function of the detected value of the variable characterizing the torque or of the variable characterizing the difference in the torque specifically with the effect of assimilating the torques generated by the individual cylinders.

The tank venting system is evacuated by the negative pressure prevailing in the intake pipe of the internal combustion engine. A regression calculation, based on a physical model which simulates the pressure variation in the event of a leak in the tank venting system, on the basis of a gas mass flow flowing through an opening, supplies a parameter which describes the curve variation of the pressure during the test for gassing out fuel and during the diagnosis. The parameter contains the information about the leak area and takes into account external influences that interfere with the signal evaluation.

A method for detecting combustion misfires in an internal combustion engine is based on the speed of rotation of the crankshaft. An unsteady running value is derived from measured cylinder segment times and subsequent correction of mechanical teeth defects. A disturbance caused by torsional oscillations of the crankshaft is taken into account by a cylinder-selective disturbance variable compensation dependent on load and speed of rotation.

Method for detecting combustion misfires in an internal combustion engine

An adaptation method for correcting tolerances of a transducer wheel includes determining a correction factor for each individual tooth or each segment of the transducer wheel by measuring angular speed while taking into account both production tolerances and variations from one manufactured part to another of its kind as well as noncentral support of the transducer wheel on the shaft. The correction factor also compensates for a mass moment caused by a piston and a connecting rod. In an adaptation algorithm, a periodic disturbance by a gas moment caused by varying cylinder pressures and a moment fed back from the road are taken into account.
