Oil-based drilling fluid compositions comprising an oil phase comprising a base oil, an aqueous phase comprising water, at least one emulsifier, and one or more additives. The at least one emulsifier comprises an amino amide comprising the formula R&#x2014;CO&#x2014;NH&#x2014;R'&#x2014;NH&#x2014;R&#x2033;&#x2014;NH, where R is a fatty acid alkyl and R&#x2032; and R&#x2033; are alkyl groups. The one or more additives are chosen from a wetting agent, a rheology modifier, a fluid-loss control additive, and a weighting additive. Methods of making the oil-based drilling fluid compositions and methods of drilling a subterranean well utilizing the oil-based drilling fluid compositions are also provided.

Oil-based drilling fluids for high pressure and high temperature drilling operations

Oil-based drilling fluid compositions which include layered double hydroxides as rheology modifiers and amino amides as emulsifiers

An oil-based drilling fluid and method of preparing an oil-based drilling fluid are disclosed. The oil-based drilling fluid comprising a base oil continuous phase, an aqueous discontinuous phase, and at least one rheology modifier. The at least one rheology modifier including an alkaline-earth diamondoid compound. The method of preparing the oil-based drilling fluid including mixing a base oil, at least one emulsifier, and at least one wetting agent to form a first mixture, adding and mixing at least one rheology modifier into the first mixture to form a second mixture, adding and mixing at least one fluid-loss control additive into the second mixture to form a third mixture, adding and mixing a brine solution into the third mixture to form a fourth mixture, and adding and mixing a weighting additive into the fourth mixture to form the oil-based drilling fluid.

Oil-based drilling fluids containing an alkaline-earth diamondoid compound as rheology modifier

A downhole connate water sample drawn from the formation surrounding a well is validated when mud filtrate concentration is acceptably low. A preferred method includes drilling the well with a water-based drilling fluid, or more generally a water-based mud (WBM), containing a water-soluble dye. The dye acts as a tracer to distinguish connate water from WBM filtrate in a downhole sample of formation fluid contaminated by mud filtrate from the water-based mud. Preferably, an optical analyzer in a sampling tool measures light transmitted through the downhole sample to produce optical density data indicative of dye concentration. Preferably, optical density is measured at a first wavelength to obtain a first optical density, and at a second wavelength, close in wavelength to the first wavelength, to obtain a second optical density. First and second optical density data are transmitted to the surface. At the surface, in a data processor, the second optical density is subtracted from the first optical density to produce a third optical density that is substantially free of scattering error. The data processor validates each sample that has an acceptably low third optical density. The invention also provides a method of determining when to collect a sample of downhole fluid drawn over a period of time from a formation surrounding a well.
