A bistatic laser radar (lidar) device is described that comprises a transmit channel () for forming a focused transmit beam, and a receive channel () for forming a focused receive beam. The device is arranged such that the focus of the transmit beam and the focus of the receive beam fall on a common axis when focused to a distance within the operable distance range of the device. The device may be used for vibrometry, wind speed measurements and the like. Implementation of such a device using optical fiber based components is described.

Bistatic laser radar apparatus

A measurement device, such as a laser radar, is described that comprises a transmitter portion for transmitting radiation to a remote probe volume, a receiver portion for detecting radiation returned from the remote probe volume and a processor for analysing the detected return radiation. The device is suitable for transmitting and receiving radiation through a window portion having associated window cleaning apparatus (e.g. wiper) for cleaning said window portion in response to a cleaning activation signal. The processor is arranged to generate a cleaning activation signal for activating window cleaning apparatus when the properties of said detected return radiation are indicative of a reduction in transmission through at least part of said window portion. In one embodiment, a conically scanned lidar is described that generates a cleaning activation signal when the power of detected return radiation varies as a function of the angle of transmission of radiation from the device.

Laser measurement device and method

A coherent differential absorption lidar (DIAL) devicecomprises a transmit portionfor directing a combined light beam to a remote target and a receive portionfor receiving light returned from the remote target and for coherently mixing the received light with its associated local oscillator beam. The combined beam comprises at least two component light beams of discrete wavelengths. The device further comprises a signal correction means. The signal correction means comprising a means for extracting a portion of each component light beam from the transmit portion, a means for introducing a frequency differencebetween each extracted component light beam and its associated local oscillator beam and a means for directing the extracted beam into the receive portion. This provides an additional correction signal thereby improving device performance.

Coherent differential absorption lidar (dial)

A coherent laser radar or lidar device () for measuring wind speed is described that comprises a transmitter for transmitting a beam of light to a remote probe volume (), a receiver for detecting back-scattered light and an analyzer for calculating wind velocity at the remote probe volume from the Doppler shift in frequency of the detected back-scattered light. The analyzer is arranged to monitor for the presence of, and/or to ensure the calculated wind speed is corrected for, any Doppler frequency components of the detected back-scattered light that arise from back-scatter off cloud located at a range greater than the range of the remote probe volume. It is described how the lidar () may be scanned and wind velocity components calculated by fitting the scanned line of sight velocity values to a predetermined function. Furthermore, it is outlined how an initial fit may be performed to determine which points are to be used in this calculation. The incorporation of a back scatter profiling means, such as ceilometer (), is also described. A wind turbine () incorporating such a device () is also described.

Laser radar device and method

A coherent laser radar (lidar) device is described. The device has a transmitter portion that comprises a single wavelength laser source, a conversion means (such as an electro-optic modulator) for producing a combined light beam that comprises at least two component light beams of discrete wavelength from the output of said single wavelength laser source, and transmit optics to direct the combined light beam to a remote target. Each component light beam of the combined light beam traverses the same optical path from the single wavelength laser source to the transmit optics. The device is used to make differential absorption measurements.

Laser radar apparatus having multiple output wavelengths

A buoyant platform apparatus, such as a buoy, is described that comprises a laser radar (lidar) wind speed measurement device. The lidar is arranged to make wind velocity measurements at one or more remote probe volumes of known position relative to said platform. The wind speed measurement apparatus may further comprise motion sensing means that, in use, monitor motion of the platform allowing wind speed at an absolute position in space to be measured. Wind velocity data may also be compensated for platform movement.

Wind speed measurement apparatus and method

A wind turbine is provided having a lidar wind speed measurement apparatus for achieving wind control. The lidar apparatus is arranged to scan the area in front of the wind turbine so as to generate a measurement of the wind speed across the wind field. The lidar apparatus may be located in the hub of the wind turbine and the look direction inclined away from the rotational axis so that rotation of the hub ensures scanning. Preferably the lidar apparatus has a plurality of look directions so as to increase the scanning rate. This may be achieved by having a number of dedicated lidar systems and/or by using multiplexed lidars. Measurement of the wind field allows improved control of the wind turbine giving efficiency and reduced wear benefits.

Wind turbine control having a lidar wind speed measurement apparatus

A coherent laser radar device is described which comprises a laser source (), and two or more transceivers () are optically connected to the laser source by optical fiber cables () that are routed through an optical routing means (). A detection means () is also provided, and radiation received by the two or more receivers () can also be optically coupled to the detection means () by optical fiber cables ().
