A method and system for pairing devices comprises transmitting a plurality of communication signals from each of a plurality of devices and setting an initial threshold vector of signal strengths as a current threshold vector of signal strengths for at least one target device selected from among the plurality of devices. The embodiment includes pairing at least one client device with the at least one target device when a measured vector of signal strengths exceeds the current threshold vector of signal strengths and adjusting the current threshold vector of signal strengths according to the pairing between the client device and the target device, thereby adaptively adjusting the current threshold vector of signal strengths.

System and method for flexibly pairing devices using adaptive variable thresholding

A wireless communication device of a first device detects a pattern of taps made with a wireless communication device of a second device. A processor of the first device automatically interprets the pattern of taps as a command from a plurality of tap pattern-based commands. Functional elements of the first device automatically perform an operation corresponding to the command to fully execute the command based only on the pattern of taps. Each of the taps comprises the distance between the first device and the second device changing from a first distance to a second distance and returning to at least the first distance within a predetermined period of time, and the first distance is at least twice as large as the second distance. Also, different patterns of taps represent different commands of the tap pattern-based commands.

A method and system for efficiently and securely permitting a user to scan electronic documents from a remote multi-function device to a user's home directory. A user can be authenticated via the multi-function device and electronic credentials associated with the user generated, which are utilized to determine the user's home directory. The multi-function device can then produce a customized template that can be selected by the user when accessing rendering/scanning services. The user can then scan a document and electronically store such a document at the home directory via an SMB (Server Message Block) protocol. Home directories can either be determined via an LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) or configured on a network interface via a default directory path and the user name.

A method and system for creating, updating, and displaying content on a plurality of paper and electronic signs is disclosed. A server receives and transmits content information that is associated with particular merchandise for the signs. The server transmits data for new signs and updates old signs automatically, either by directly changing the electronic display device, or by printing a new paper sign to a corresponding printer or CPU.

In a network comprising printers and print servers which retain queues of print jobs, a user is able to survey and view selected portions of the network, either by enumerating printers to be queried directly, or by enumerating servers. A method for automatically configuring a printer in a network is provided. In practice, an unconfigured printer is communicatively coupled to the network and begins transmitting an advertising protocol. In turn, an entry, varying as a function of the advertising protocol is entered into a table. In response to reading the entry, an auto install program creates a set of print related objects and stores them for use with a print service manager. By reference to the objects, the print service manager communicates information to a broker for indicating to a set of network users that print operations can be performed with the previously unconfigured printer.
