A high capacity node includes a plurality of receiver sections and a plurality of transmitter sections; and an electrical switching fabric between the plurality of receiver sections and the plurality of transmitter sections, wherein each of the plurality of receiver sections and the plurality of transmitter sections interface the electrical switching fabric at a full signal level and the electrical switching fabric is configured to perform flow switching on the full signal level between respective receiver sections and transmitter sections, and wherein the plurality of receiver sections, the plurality of transmitter sections, and one or more stages of the electrical switching fabric are implemented in one or more optoelectronic integrated circuits.

High capacity fiber-optic integrated transmission and switching systems

A high capacity node includes a plurality of transceivers each with a transmitter configured to support a wavelength within a full transparent window of one or more optical fibers; and one or more optical amplifiers covering the full transparent window, wherein the one or more optical amplifiers comprise one of (i) a single ultra-wideband amplifier covering the full transparent window and (ii) a plurality of amplifiers each supporting a different band of the full transparent window.

High capacity fiber-optic integrated transmission systems

Systems and methods are described for reducing coherence effect in narrow line-width light sources through various modulation techniques. The systems and methods can include a narrow line-width laser source with a thermoelectric cooler thermally coupled thereto and a controller communicatively coupled to the thermoelectric cooler. The controller is configured to provide a varied input signal to the thermoelectric cooler to reduce coherence of the narrow line-width laser source by artificially broadening the narrow line-width on a time averaged basis. The systems and methods can also include direct modulation of the narrow line-width laser source. The systems and methods can include a narrow line-width Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR). The systems and methods can also include direct modulation of the narrow line-width laser source with or without the varied input signal to the thermoelectric cooler.

Systems and methods reducing coherence effect in narrow line-width light sources

A reconfigurable electrical add/drop multiplexing node, a network, and optoelectronic integrated circuit form a novel high capacity fiber-optic integrated transmission and switching system with a baseline target capacity in excess of 1 Tbps. The node, network, and circuit can leverage optoelectronic integration of transmission and switching components along with using the full 'transparency' window of modern optical fibers from about 1270 nm to about 1670 nm for a large number of relatively low-rate wavelengths. The electrical switching fabric can be part of a Reconfigurable Electrical Add/Drop Multiplexer (READM) with similar functionality as a Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (ROADM) except in a highly integrated fashion with the transmission components. The electrical switching fabric can implement flow switching on a composite signal to provide comparable functionality to optical components in electrical circuitry such as in Complementary metal-oxide-semiconductors.

The present invention provides a compact, low cost integrated continuous wave (CW) laser/electro-absorption (EA) modulator solution that supports the non-return to zero (NRZ) modulation format for long-haul optical transmission that results in high output extinction ratio of an integrated EA modulated laser (EML) and low modulator chirp. The methods and systems of the present invention treat the laser and EA modulator sections of the EML as separate components. An information signal is connected to two separate drivers: a laser driver that drives the laser section and a modulator driver that drives the EA modulator section.

Method and systems for optimizing laser and electro-absorption modulator performance for long-haul optical transmission

A system for real-time linewidth reduction in an optical source includes a laser device comprising a back facet, wherein the laser device receives a modulated input current and generates an optical output signal; an etalon device disposed adjacent to the back facet of the laser device, wherein the etalon device receives an optical feedback output signal from the back facet of the laser device, and wherein the etalon device monitors the optical feedback output signal for changes in frequency and, if they exist, generates an optical correction output signal; a photo-detector device disposed adjacent to the etalon device, wherein the photo-detector device receives the optical feedback and correction output signals, and wherein the photo-detector device converts the optical feedback and correction output signals into an electrical signal; and a feedback correction loop coupled to the photo-detector device, wherein the feedback correction loop receives the electrical signal from the photo-detector device and generates a substantially linear feedback current. The input current is modified by the substantially linear feedback current to form the modulated input current.

Semiconductor laser utilizing real-time linewidth reduction method

The present invention provides a compact analog directly modulated laser configuration that is suitable for use in the field that uses electrical feedback to compensate for non-linearity in real time, such that no matter how the LI curve changes, the electrical feedback compensates for non-linearity by amplifying a portion of the output analog optical signal and combining it with the input analog electrical signal using the standard control method of negative feedback. When the gain of the feedback loop is relatively high, the overall transfer function of the system is primarily dependent on the feedback loop gain block, which is substantially linear. This is accomplished by incorporating a relatively large bandwidth photo-detector at the back facet of the laser that both monitors the output power of the system and provides a feedback signal to the linearization control circuit, as well as an amplifier. The amplified signal from the relatively large bandwidth photo-detector is used to correct for various undesirable effects, such as non-linearity and relative intensity noise (RIN) of the laser. The signal from the relatively large bandwidth photo-detector also allows the laser to operate effectively close to threshold.
