The present disclosure concerns a method for preparing florasulam which involves treating a solution of 2,6-difluoroaniline in 1,2-propylene glycol with: a) sulfonyl chloride III and then b) a base to provide, after workup and isolation, florasulam (I) in yields of about 65-85%. The treatment of 2,6-difluoroaniline with sulfonyl chloride III and the base are conducted by controlled additions.

Method of preparation of florasulam

Improved methods for preparing chemical precursors to sulfonyl chloride III, which are important intermediates in the preparation of pyroxsulam herbicide are provided. Specifically, these precursors are compounds of Formulas VII and/or VIII, and IX, wherein R is a C-Calkyl, Ris a C-Calkyl, X is Cl or OH, Y is halogen, OH, or OR, and Ris a C-Calkyl. 

Preparation of sulfonamide herbicide process intermediates

The present disclosure provides a process for the production of 4-azidosulfonylphthalic anhydride. In an embodiment, a process is provided and includes chlorinating 4-sulfophthalic acid trisodium salt (1), under solvent reaction conditions, to form a dissolved 4-chlorosulfonylphthalic anhydride (2) and an insoluble sodium chloride. The process includes first removing the insoluble sodium chloride from the dissolved 4-chlorosulfonylphthalic anhydride to form an isolated 4-chlorosulfonylphthalic anhydride. The process includes reacting, under solvent reaction conditions, the isolated 4-chlorosulfonylphthalic anhydride with sodium azide to form a dissolved 4-azidosulfonylphthalic anhydride and an insoluble sodium chloride. The process includes second removing the insoluble sodium chloride from the dissolved 4-azidosulfonylphthalic anhydride to form an isolated 4-azidosulfonylphthalic anhydride. The process includes retrieving a solid 4-azidosulfonylphthalic anhydride (3) from the isolated 4-azidosulfonylphthalic anhydride.

Process for producing 4-azidosulfonylphthalic anhydride

The present disclosure is directed to the production of substituted phenylene aromatic diesters and 5-tert-butyl-3-methyl-1,2-phenylene dibenzoate (or 'BMPD') in particular. The processes disclosed herein produce a liquid BMPD product. The liquid BMPD product unexpectedly creates production efficiencies by reducing the number of production steps, reducing the amount and/or number of reagents required for BMPD production. The liquid BMPD product may also be utilized in procatalyst production yielding similar production efficiencies. The procatalyst composition is subsequently used for olefin polymerization.
