A cannulation system for cardiac support uses an inner cannula disposed within an outer cannula. The outer cannula includes a fluid inlet for placement within the right atrium of a heart. The inner cannula includes a fluid inlet extending through the fluid inlet of the outer cannula and the atrial septum for placement within at least one of the left atrium and left ventricle of the heart. The cannulation system also employs a pumping assembly coupled to the inner and outer cannulas to withdraw blood from the right atrium for delivery to the pulmonary artery to provide right heart support, or to withdraw blood from at least one of the left atrium and left ventricle for delivery into the aorta to provide left heart support, or both.

Methods and apparatus are described to manipulate the position of the heart to provide surgical access to lateral and posterior portions of the heart. A jack apparatus connected to a surgical retractor can be positioned in the surgical cavity to produce a sideways force on the heart. A tripod apparatus can be used to hold up the heart into a desired position. A band can be attached to the heart to rotate its position. Fingers attached to the bottom of a blade on a surgical retractor can be used to manipulate the hearts position.

Heart stabilizer apparatus

A blood pump for use in CPB and other heart surgeries includes a reusable motor stator element which is enclosed in a disposable, sterile pump housing. The reusable, non-sterilized motor stator element is completely encased by the pump housing so that the motor stator can be reused without sterilization. The sterile housing allows the blood pump to be placed closed to the patient and within the sterile surgical field. The placement of the blood pump close to the heart during heart surgery greatly reduces the priming volume of the system thereby reducing the amount of saline or drugs which are introduced the patient's blood. The sterile housing may be evacuated to reduce the risk of emboli which may occur due to the failure of a seal.
