Examples relate to a microscope system comprising a Light-Emitting Diode (LED)-based illumination system and at least one image sensor assembly, and to a corresponding system, method and computer program. The LED-based illumination system is configured to emit radiation power having at least one peak at a wavelength that is tuned to an excitation wavelength of at least one fluorescent material and/or to emit radiation power across a white light spectrum, with the light emitted across the white light spectrum being filtered such that light having a wavelength spectrum that coincides with at least one fluorescence emission wavelength spectrum of the at least one fluorescent material is attenuated or blocked. The at least one image sensor assembly is configured to generate image data, with the image data (at least) representing light reflected by a sample that is illuminated by the LED-based illumination system. The microscope system comprises one or more processors, configured to process the image data to generate processed image data.

Concept for a microscope system with an LED-based illumination system

An illumination and observation system () for an ophthalmic surgical microscope () has first, second, third and fourth observation pupils () for two observers, a coaxial illumination () in the first, third and fourth observation pupils to generate a red reflex () therein, and a main illumination () in the second observation pupil. For widely illuminating the surroundings, the main illumination has a larger illumination field than the coaxial illumination in any of the first, third and fourth observation pupils. For superior observation quality and a visible and homogenous red reflex in the second observation pupil, the main illumination overlaps at least 50% with the second observation pupil. The main illumination may be aligned within &#xb1;5&#xb0; to an optical axis () of the second observation pupil and to overlap the coaxial illumination at least 50% with the first, third and fourth observation pupils.

The present invention provides a pivotable optical assembly for a surgical microscope, specifically a zero-degree assistant's device, the assembly comprising: a microscope body interface for mounting the assembly on a microscope body; an assistant's module including an interface for an assistant's tube, the assistant's module being pivotable about a pivot axis relative to the microscope body; and a retaining system that blocks pivoting the assistant's module about the pivot axis. The retaining system comprises: a retaining element being moveable from a locking position into a release position, a biasing member forcing the retaining element into the locking position, and a hand-operable control element acting on the retaining element for moving it from the locking position into the release position, as well as a pivotable optical assembly comprising said retaining system according to the invention, whose retaining element, in its blocking position, blocks pivoting the assistant's module about the pivot axis.
