A wiredrawing machine includes dies and capstans for reduces the cross sectional area of the wire. The machine includes a double die situated at the last capstan to reduce the cross sectional wire one final time in such a way that delamination and central bursting is minimized.

Three methods of constructing tires having functionally graded belts are provided. According to one method a bandage is used to hold neighboring belt segments in position so they may be simultaneously applied to a carcass. According to a second method, longitudinal incisions are applied to a belt ply to achieve the desired belt stiffness. According to a third method clamps are applied to a belt ply to reorient the belt cords.

Method of manufacturing segmented belt tires

A wire drawing machine includes a frame; at least one die operatively supported by the frame; at least one drawing block rotatably supported by the frame for use in drawing wire through the die; and, a motor for use in providing power. A belt system connects the motor to the drawing block so that the drawing block can be rotated. To adjust the speed and torque of the drawing block, the belt is removed and one sprocket is replaced with a second sprocket.

To achieve a drawn wire with a tensile strength defined by the equation of Y=Yexp(A&#x3b5;) wherein Y is the tensile strength in MPa (N/mm), Yis the strength of as patented wire, Ais a coefficient dependant on wire chemistry and drawing conditions, and &#x3b5;is a total true drawing strain, a high carbon steel wire contains 0.95 to 1.3% carbon and a combination of chromium, manganese, silicon, cobalt, niobium, and boron is processed such that the bright wire of an intermediate diameter has a structure void of micro cracks, patented to produce a desired microstructure with defined inter-lamella spacing and austenite grain, coated with brass, and fine drawn with an optimized die draft schedule at a specified true strain.

High strength, high carbon steel wire

Steel wire is drawn from an initial diameter to a desired final or intermediate diameter by the use of a non-linear tapered draft. During the non-linear tapered draft, the wire is drawn through a series of successive dies, reducing the wire diameter to a desired diameter, wherein the drawing strain at each successive die is gradually reduced. The drawing strain is based upon the actual strength of the steel at each die. The wire may also be subjected to a skin pass, reducing the wire by a diameter by less than 4%, following reduction of the wire to either the final or the intermediate diameter.

The present invention is directed towards a pneumatic radial tire. The tire is comprised of a reinforcing belt structure wherein the belt plies are divided into at least three segments. The reinforcing cords in each segment of a ply are oriented in the same inclination direction. By maintaining the same cord inclination in the segments, dividing the belt ply into segments creates hinge points for the belt ply, reducing the stiffness of the ply across the width of the tread from the centerline of the tire to the tread edges. If the belt structure has more than one reinforcing ply, the segments of the adjacent plies are staggered by a distance at greater than the radial height between the radially inner side of the adjacent belt plies.
