The present invention relates to an aqueous dispersion obtained by a process comprising the steps of (a) preparing an acidic copolymer (A) by radical copolymerization of monomers comprising: (a1) at least one unsaturated fatty acid, (a2) at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer containing at least one acid group or group capable of forming an acid group, (a3) at least one other ethylenically unsaturated monomer different from (a1) and (a2), (b) neutralizing totally or partially the acid groups of copolymer (A) and dissolving it in water, (c) copolymerizing in the solution obtained at step (b) a monomer mixture different from the monomer mixture of step (a) to form a copolymer (B) as well as blends based on such dispersions, especially in combination with oxidatively drying alkyds.

The invention relates to an aqueous dispersion of a modified alkyd resin comprising water, an emulsifier S a copolymer P having moieties derived from one or more of esters M1 of an olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid M11 having at least one olefinic unsaturation and at least one acid group per molecule, with a linear, branched or cyclic aliphatic hydroxy-functional compound M12 having at least one hydroxyl group per molecule, esters M2 of an olefinically unsaturated hydroxy functional compound M22 having at least one olefinic unsaturation and at least one hydroxyl group per molecule, with linear, branched or cyclic aliphatic carboxylic acid M21 having no olefinic unsaturation and at least one acid group per molecule, an olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid M11 having at least one olefinic unsaturation and at least one acid group per molecule, an olefinically unsaturated hydroxy functional compound M22 having at least one olefinic unsaturation and at least one hydroxyl group per molecule, an olefinically unsaturated compound M3 that has at least one olefinic unsaturation, selected from the group consisting of olefinically unsaturated alkylaromatic compounds M31, olefinically unsaturated aliphatic ethers M32, olefinically unsaturated aliphatic ketones M33, olefinically unsaturated aliphatic halogenides M34, and olefinically unsaturated aliphatic pseudohalogenides M35, an alkyd resin A based on aliphatic linear or branched monocarboxylic acids A1 having from six to forty carbon atoms, aliphatic linear or branched or cyclic hydroxy-functional compounds A2 having at least two hydroxyl groups per molecule, aromatic or aliphatic linear, branched or cyclic acids A3 having at least two acid groups per molecule, wherein the alkyd resin A has an acid number of at least 3 mg/g, and wherein the ratio m(A)/m(P) of the mass m(A) of the alkyd resin A to the mass m(P) of the polymer P is at least 1 kg/0.5 kg, a method for their preparation, and a method of use thereof.

Modified water-borne alkyd resin

The invention relates to a polyurethane P comprising a moiety derived from a polyfunctional isocyanate F, and a hydroxyfunctional compound ABCE made from a grafted fatty acid AB which in turn is made from a fatty acid A having at least one olefinic unsaturation, and grafted with a mixture B of olefinically unsaturated monomers which mixture comprises at least one acid-functional olefinically unsaturated monomer B1, wherein the grafted fatty acid AB has on average at least 1.1 acid groups per molecule, at least one polyhydric alcohol C having at least two hydroxyl groups, and at least one fatty acid E, to a process of making this polyurethane, and to a method of use thereof in the form of an aqueous dispersion to formulate coating compositions.

Disclosed are alkyd resin emulsions for coating varnishes, containing a water-insoluble alkyd resin A and a water-soluble alkyd resin B that is used as an emulsifying resin and represents an esterification product of an alkyd resin Ba which can be homogeneously mixed with the alkyd resin A at a weight ratio (Ba to A) ranging between 2:98 and 50:50, alkyd resin A being the resin that is to be emulsified, and an adduct Bb of a C-Calkoxy polyethylene glycol Bba and a cycloaliphatic dicarboxylic acid anhydride Bbb at a mole ration (Bba to Bbb) ranging between 09.95:1.05 mol/mol and 1.05:0.95 mol/mol. Also disclosed is a method for the production thereof, the use thereof for coating substrates selected among textiles, mineral materials, metals, and wood.

Water-dilutable binders which are self-crosslinking at room temperature, comprising reaction products ABF with epoxy-amine adducts A and formaldehyde resin formers B selected from phenols B1, (substituted) ureas B2, melamine B3, guanamines B4, and mixtures of said resin formers, with formaldehyde F or compounds which give off formaldehyde under the reaction conditions, may be formulated, following at least partial neutralization, to give aqueous coating materials which give coatings affording outstanding corrosion protection.
