A fenestration assembly comprising a sliding glass assembly that slides between a fully closed position and a fully open position in which the sliding glass assembly is received into a pocket of the fenestration assembly. The pocket is covered on at least one side with insulation. The fenestration assembly may have two sliding glass assemblies. The fenestration assembly may be used in an energy efficient building system.

Energy efficient fenestration assembly

A framed panel and related method of manufacture are disclosed. A framed panel unit includes a panel along the edge of which thermoplastic frame members are disposed. The frame members have first and second opposed side walls which define a channel for receiving the edge of the panel. The channel of each frame member has spacers between the panel and each side wall for spacing the panel from the side walls. Prior to welding together the ends of the frame members, the spacers retain the frame members on the panel. The panel may include multiple opposed sheet members with a spacer between the sheet members spacing them apart, and a reactive thermoplastic sealant material bonding the sheets to the frame members. An associated method of forming a named panel, frame members for a panel, and a spacer component for use in mounting a panel within a channel of a frame member are also disclosed.

Framed panel and related method of manufacture

Vibratory welded connections are formed between first and second members of thermoplastic material by interposing a junction piece of similar material and vibrating the junction piece at high speed while pressing the first and second members in a controlled manner against opposite sides of the junction piece. Friction created by the vibration generates heat which melts a small amount of material at the engaging surfaces which upon cooling provides a strong welded joint having minimal flash. Entire frame systems such as window frames can be fabricated by an apparatus system which forms a friction welded joint between adjacent ends of the frame members. Furthermore the frame can be fabricated around a panel such as a glazing panel. The welded connections formed by the system do not mar the finish of the frame members and produce no unsightly flash bead requiring subsequent machining steps for its removal.

Method and apparatus for vibration welding of thermoplastic components

Vibratory welded connections are formed between first and second members () of thermoplastic material by interposing a junction piece () of similar material and vibrating the junction piece () at high speed while pressing the first second members () in a controlled manner against opposite sides of the junction piece (). A fenestration sealed frame insulating glazing panel has an integral planar frame formed by four rigid plastic profiles interconnected end-to-end to define corners, the profiles having a low heat conductivity. Two glazing sheets are arranged in a spaced parallel relationship attached on opposite sides of the frame in a rigid manner by thermosetting adhesive to form an integral structure having an insulating cavity enclosed by the frame. The front face of each frame profile facing towards the cavity is covered by a low permeability sealant. The sealed frame glazing panel can include a third glazing sheet positioned in parallel between the first two glazing sheets and likewise interconnected at its perimeter to the frame to divide the insulating cavity into two parallel coextensive sub-cavities. The profiles of the frame can be made from structural plastic foam material, glass fiber, oriented thermoplastic, or various other materials of low thermal conductivity.

Fenestration sealed frame, insulating glazing panels

An architectural building panel comprises a sealed glazing unit having at least two spaced apart parallel glazing sheets which define a cavity closed by a peripheral seal. Opaque strip elements on the building panel provide the appearance of window frames surrounding transparent glass areas, with regions of the panel outside these frames being provided with surface area patterns that simulate the appearance of conventional building materials such as brick or the like. The building panel can be used in any convenient size, and may be of a size to extend between structural floors of a building so that a curtain wall for the building can be composed of exteriors of such building panels.

Architectural building panel

A fenestration sealed frame insulating glazing panel has an integral planar frame formed by four rigid plastic profiles interconnected end-to-end to define corners, the profiles having a low heat conductivity. Two glazing sheets are arranged in spaced parallel relationship attached on opposite sides of the frame in rigid manner by thermosetting adhesive to form an integral structure having an insulating cavity enclosed by the frame. The front face of each frame profile presented towards the cavity is covered by a low permeability sealant. The sealed frame glazing panel can include a third glazing sheet positioned in parallel between the first two glazing sheets and likewise interconnected at its perimeter to the frame to divide the insulating cavity into two parallel coextensive sub-cavities. The profiles of the frame can be made from structural plastic foam material, glass fiber, oriented thermoplastic, or various other materials of low thermal conductivity. The glazing panel can be incorporated as a fixed window or as an operating window or door in an external building wall.

A hand tool for applying adhesive strip material to a glass sheet in the fabrication of double glazed windows has a body with a channel extending through the lower side thereof to guide an adhesive strip therethrough and a positioning member adjacent the channel for guiding the tool along the edge of a glass sheet. An adjustable wheel applies pressure on the strip to urge it to adhere with the glass sheet and a cutting mechanism mounted on the body is selectively operable for partially cutting the strip (as when the strip has to be bent through 90&deg; at a corner of the glass sheet) and for fully cutting the strip (as when the strip applying step has been completed). The tool includes a pusher element carried adjacent one side of the channel and selectively operable to push the strip in the channel laterally into a side extension into full registration with the cutter when it is desired to settle the strip at the end of the strip applying operation. When the cutter is actuated without the pusher element being operated, the strip is only partially cut.

Hand tool for adhesive strip application

Simulated heritage windows e.g. in the appearance of leaded or stained glass panels are made by applying strips of material such as plastic tape in predetermined patterns on registering surfaces of the sheets which make up a double or triple glaze window. The strips can be applied in any desired pattern, e.g. rectilinear or diamond shaped and are applied in an automated manner by tape dispensing heads that are moved over the glass surface in parallel. The production system includes a conveyor for transporting the glass sheets as well as a rotary suction cup which grips the sheets and enables its rotation through e.g. 90&deg; when a second set of strips is to be applied at right angles to the first strip. The apparatus also includes a turntable by means of which the glass sheet can be flipped over or inverted when strips are to be applied to both of its sides.

Manufacture of simulated heritage windows

A sealed glazing unit simulating the appearance of a traditional divided-lite window has spaced apart parallel co-extensive glazing sheets interconnected by a peripheral seal. Muntin grid elements are located on at least two surfaces of the glazing sheets in mutually aligned registration, the elements being of a width sufficient to create a visual illusion of solid muntin bars within the glazing sheet cavity. Each of the muntin grid elements has on one side a relatively dark shade facing interiorly of the glazing unit and in the opposite side a relatively light shade facing exteriorly of the glazing unit, the combination of these shades creating the visual appearance of solid muntin bars within the cavity. Muntin grid elements within the glazing unit are preferably in the form of strips of plastic material adhered to the cavity glass surfaces, whereas muntin grid elements on the exterior surfaces of the unit can alternatively be formed as relatively thick members e.g. of wood, or of hollow aluminum or plastic.

Simulated divided light windows

In applying an adhesive strip to a surface border at the periphery of a glass sheet a method comprises the steps of locating the glass sheet in the generally upright position and providing a hand tool that is adapted to be manipulated manually by the operator to apply the adhesive strip around the edges of the sheet. The strip is delivered from an overhead supply in a continuous length and is applied as the operator manipulates the hand tool to pass along the periphery of the sheet. The glass sheet can be arranged to be moved vertically and/or horizontally to make the strip application process more convenient for the operator.

Manual method and related equipment for adhesive strip application

There is described a multiple-pane sealed glazing unit having two or more parallel glazing sheets which are spaced apart and sealed at the peripheral edges. Incorporated within the unit is a decorative feature comprised of patterns applied to two or more of the glazing sheets and where at least portions of these patterns register with each other and are of sufficient width as to provide the visual appearance of solid members spanning the spacing between at least two of the glazing sheets. In one preferred embodiment, the registering patterns are striped criss-cross patterns and provide the visual appearance of traditional muntin-bar windows. In a second preferred embodiment, the registering patterns are also striped criss-cross patterns and provide the visual appearance of traditional leaded-glass window panels. In a third preferred embodiment, the registering patterns provide the visual appearance of traditional lattice-work, sun-screen panels.

Decorative multiple-glazed sealed units

There is described a multiple-pane glazing unit which has top and bottom edges and two side edges and two or more, parallel glazing sheets enclosing a vertical cavity, or cavities. A convective-flow barrier is positioned adjacent to the bottom edge of the glazing sheets within the cavity, or cavities. The barrier is a strip-like member, dimensioned to be in sealing contact, in cold temperature conditions, with both glazing sheets which form a cavity between them. The strip is of a selected material, or of a physical configuration, such that it is flexible of itself or has a flexible edge or edges to accommodate variations in cavity width caused by, say, temperature changes along the length of the barrier. A second similar convective-flow barrier may be positioned adjacent and parallel to the top edge of the unit within the cavity and indeed, intermediate barriers may also be provided between top and bottom barriers and parallel thereto. A vertically extending barrier or barriers intersecting the convective-flow barriers may also be provided.

Convective gas-flow inhibitors

There is described a multi-pane glazing unit, having top and bottom edges and two side edges. The glazing unit includes two parallel glazing sheets enclosing a vertical cavity. A convective-flow barrier is position adjacent to and extending substantially along the bottom edge of the glazing unit within the cavity. In operation, cold-side convective flow is prevented by the barrier from directly reaching a bottom region of the warm-side glazing sheet.

Convection gas flow inhibitor

There is described a multiple pane insulated sealed glazing unit having two or more glazing sheets which are maintained parallel and spaced apart by a resilient spacing and sealing assembly which runs around the periphery of the sheets. An insulating airspace is thus formed between the sheets. The assembly includes an inner spacer sandwiched between the sheets and located inwardly of the glazing edges, creating an outwardly facing perimeter channel. The inner spacer is comprised of a moisture permeable foam material which may be flexible or semi-rigid. The spacer contains desiccant material and has a pressure sensitive adhesive preapplied on two opposite sides adjacent the sheets. The inwardly directed face of the spacer is reistant to ultra-violet radiation and the spacer can be coiled for storage. The assembly also has an outer sealing filling in the channel. In a preferred embodiment the spacer is substantially backed with a flexible vapor and gas barrier coating, sheet or film.
