Aspects of the subject disclosure may include, for example, a system that includes a processing system including at least one processor and a memory that stores executable instructions that, when executed by the processing system, facilitate performance of operations including receiving a unique identifying number for an entity, a vector associated with the entity, and a timestamp from a requestor, generating a key using the unique identifying number, the vector, and the timestamp, and sending the key to the requestor, wherein the requestor uses the key to store information associated with the entity. A communications network is disclosed and includes a broadband communication line having a first derived voice channel and a second derived voice channel, wherein the first and second derived voice channels are established as a function of an available bandwidth associated with the broadband communication line. The communication network further includes a residential gateway in communication with the broadband communication line. The residential gateway includes a switch, a network interface device in communication with the switch, and wherein the switch is configured to select at least one of the first or second derived voice channels for voice communication over the broadband communication line as a function of the available bandwidth.

An example disclosed method comprises receiving a combined signal at a customer premises, the combined signal including a first signal associated with a first frequency range and a second signal associated with a second frequency range larger than the first frequency range, monitoring for power outages at the customer premises, and when no power outage at the customer premises is detected, switching the second signal for distribution at the customer premises using a wireline distribution system integrated in the customer premises, and switching the first signal for distribution at the customer premises using a wireless distribution system and without using the wireline distribution system.

A method and device for distributing both high-speed data service, such as digital computer, video and multimedia data, and lower speed data service, such as POTS voice telephone signals, throughout a customer premises. High-speed digital data and lower speed POTS voice signals are separated by a POTS splitter and distributed throughout the customer premises on separate distribution networks. The lower speed POTS is carried on a wireless distribution network and the high-speed data carried on the existing customer premises wiring ordinarily used for POTS.

A wide area communications network or simply a communications network is includes a broadband communication line having a first voice channel and a second voice channel, wherein the first and second voice channels are derived channels. The communications network further includes a residential gateway in communication with the broadband communication line. The residential gateway includes a network switch, a network interface device in communication with the network switch wherein the network switch is configured to select at least one of the first or second voice channels for voice communication over the broadband communication line.

In addition to the analog voice line, the digital data line provides an additional digital voice channel for placing telephone voice calls.

A method and system of providing facsimile service over a digital subscriber line is provided. The method includes the steps of dialing a telephone number associated with a facsimile machine connected to a digital subscriber line and routing facsimile data over the digital subscriber line. The system includes a facsimile machine coupled to an ATM switch that is, in turn , coupled to a digital subscriber line, wherein the digital subscriber line includes a first virtual circuit and a second virtual circuit.
