A luminescent optical device based on a luminescent solar collector, LSC, is disclosed. In addition to components forming a LSC for generating electrical energy from solar energy, the luminescent optical device also includes a light source, and optionally one or more sensors, both electrically connected to an energy storage device of the LSC. Under the control of a control unit, the light source may emit light of different wavelengths, for example in response to environmental data measured by the sensor, thereby exciting respective domains containing luminescence material to emit light of different colours. The luminescent optical device may function as a standalone and fully integrated device that is capable of harvesting energy, illuminating itself and displaying various content conveniently and flexibly, for various purposes.

Luminescent optical device and a film for use with such a luminescent optical device

The invention provides a luminescent optical device () having an optical waveguide (). The luminescent optical device () further has a photo-luminescent structure () on or inside the optical waveguide (). The photo-luminescent structure () comprises a plurality of photo-luminescent domains () containing photo-luminescent material (). The photo-luminescent material () is capable of emitting emission light upon excitation by excitation light. The photo-luminescent domains () are arranged to emit, upon excitation by excitation light, at least part of the emission light into the optical waveguide layer (). The luminescent optical device () further may comprise a lens structure () on the optical waveguide (). The lens structure () comprises a plurality of lenses (), arranged to capture incident light provided from an external light source, in particular the sun, and to concentrate the incident light onto the plurality of photo-luminescent domains () as excitation light for excitation of the photo-luminescent material ().

Luminescent optical device and solar cell system with such luminescent optical device

An optical device () is provided. The optical device comprising a switchable layer () at least one alignment layer () a light guiding system (), whereas the switchable layer () comprises a luminescent material () for absorbing and emitting light, whereby the alignment of the luminescent material () is changeable and the light guiding system () guides the emitted light, whereby the switchable layer () is in contact with the at least one alignment layer () and the luminescent material () exhibits anisotropic properties, whereby the optical device () comprises a light energy-converting means (), wherein the light guiding system () is in physical contact with the energy converting means ().

A first aspect of the invention relates to a luminescent object comprising: a. a luminescent layer or core containing a photoluminescent material; and b. a wavelength-selective mirror; wherein the luminescent layer or luminescent core is optically coupled to the wavelength-selective mirror, said wavelength-selective mirror being at least 50% transparent to light absorbed by the photoluminescent material and at least 50% reflective to radiation that is emitted by the photoluminescent material. The luminescent object according to the present invention may advantageously be employed in luminescent solar concentrator systems as it enables highly efficient transportation of radiation emitted by the photoluminescent material following exposure to incident solar light. Another aspect of the invention concerns a photovoltaic device comprising an electromagnetic radiation collection medium containing the aforementioned luminescent object and a photovoltaic cell capable of converting optical radiation to electrical energy which is optically coupled to the luminescent object. Further aspects of the invention include a fluorescent light activated display and a room lighting system comprising the aforementioned luminescent object.

Luminescent object and utilization thereof

A first aspect of the invention relates to a luminescent object comprising an aligned polymer that contains an oriented photoluminescent material, said aligned polymer having a pretilt angle of 10-90&#xb0;. The luminescent object according to the present invention may advantageously be employed in luminescent solar concentrator systems as it enables highly efficient transportation of radiation emitted by the photoluminescent material following exposure to incident solar light. Another aspect of the invention concerns a photovoltaic device comprising an electromagnetic radiation collection medium containing the aforementioned luminescent object and a photovoltaic cell capable of converting optical radiation to electrical energy which is optically coupled to the luminescent object. Further aspects of the invention include a fluorescent light activated display and a room lighting system comprising the aforementioned luminescent object.
