A vehicle safety system includes a module including an airbag and an inflator. The inflator includes a housing () in which a combustion chamber () containing a pyrotechnic propellant is arranged in which hot gas is generated and which housing includes at least one escape orifice () toward the environment of the inflator (), as well as a coolant reservoir () arranged in the housing () in which coolant is accommodated prior to activation of the inflator () and which has at least one coolant outlet orifice ('). The coolant outlet orifice () is arranged in direct vicinity of the outlet orifice (). Upon activation of the inflator () coolant flows out of the inflator into the protection system and wets an adjacent wall () of the protection system against which also the hot gas is flowing.

A gas generator for a vehicle occupant restraint system a rigid outer housing (), a chamber () formed in the outer housing (), in which a compressed gas is present at least upon activation of the gas generator (), a component immovable () relative to the outer housing (12), at least one outflow opening () formed in the immovable component (), and a least one resilient element (), which is clamped inside the outer housing () and rests against the immovable component () at least in its normal position. In its normal position, the resilient element () closes a flow path between the chamber () and external surroundings of the gas generator () and is deformed elastically under the influence of compressed gas, whereby it clears a flow cross-section () whose size is increasing with increasing pressure.

Vehicle impact protection system

A gas generator comprises an outflow chamber and a freeing element. The outflow chamber contains at least briefly gas under pressure, when the gas generator is activated and at least one outflow opening is arranged in a side wall of the outflow chamber. The freeing element is arranged non-displaceably in the outflow chamber and has a peripheral wall and a base wall. The peripheral wall extends along the side wall and closes at least one outflow opening before an activation of the gas generator. The base wall is connected with the peripheral wall. The freeing element is constructed so that on exceeding a predetermined gas pressure in the outflow chamber, the base wall turns inwards under partial plastic deformation of the peripheral wall and at least one hitherto concealed outflow opening is freed by the plastic deformation of the peripheral wall.

A gas generator for a safety system, in particular for a vehicle occupant restraint system, comprises a combustion chamber filled with propellant, in which a hot gas is generated after igniting and burning of the propellant, a fluid chamber containing a fluid, a mixing chamber in which fluid and hot gas are mixed in a mixture ratio, and at least one control device which controls the mixture ratio of fluid and hot gas in the mixing chamber.
