There is described a method for the production of a functional polyester having functional group X. The method comprises the step of melt blending a composition comprising (i) a high number average molecular weight (Mn) polyester having a Mn of ≥6,000 Da; and (ii) a functional compound comprising functional group Y which may be the same as functional group X or be different to functional group X but be operable to form functional group X in the functional polyester. The composition is melt blended such that the high Mn polyester and the functional compound react to produce the functional polyester. The high Mn polyester has a Mn that is higher than the Mn of the functional compound. The present invention extends to functional polyesters produced by the method; aqueous, solventborne and powder coating compositions containing the functional polyester, and articles coated with the said coating compositions.

Functional polyester and method of producing the same

A polyhydroxyalkylamide material having the formula (I), wherein Z represents a polymer or an alkylene, alkenylene, alkynylene or arylene group; Z' represents a bivalent organic linking group; m is 0 or 1; X represents a bivalent organic bridging group; R represents a hydroxyalkylamide group; and n is at least 2. The present invention extends to coatings compositions containing the polyhydroxyalkylamide material and articles coated with coatings derived from said coated compositions.

Polyhydroxyalkylamide materials for use as crosslinkers

There is described an acrylic polyester resin, obtainable by grafting an acrylic polymer with a polyester material. The polyester material is obtainable by polymerizing (i) a polyacid component, with (ii) a polyol component, including—2,2,4,4-tetraallcylcyclobutane-1,3-diol. One of the polyacid component or the polyol component comprises a functional monomer operable to impart functionality on to the polyester resin, such that an acrylic polymer may be grafted with the polyester material via the use of said functionality. Also provided is an aqueous coating composition comprising the acrylic polyester resin and a metal packaging containing coated with the composition.

Acrylic polyester resin and an aqueous coating composition containing the same

The present invention relates to a coating composition, the coating composition comprising: a) a solution polymerised acrylic material; b) an emulsion polymerised acrylic latex material, wherein one or both of the solution polymerised acrylic material and the emulsion polymerised acrylic latex material have acid functionality; and c) a crosslinker material operable to crosslink the acid functionality on the solution polymerised acrylic material and/or emulsion polymerised acrylic latex material, the present invention also extends to a food and/or beverage package coated on at least a portion thereof with said coating composition.

Coating composition

There is described an acrylic polyester resin, obtainable by grafting an acrylic polymer with a polyester material. The polyester material is obtainable by polymerizing (i) a polyacid component, with (ii) a polyol component. At least one of the polyacid component and/or the polyol component comprises a monomer having an aliphatic group containing at least 15 carbon atoms. At least one of the polyacid component and/or the polyol component comprises a functional monomer operable to impart functionality on to the polyester resin, such that an acrylic polymer may be grafted with the polyester material via the use of said functionality. Also provided is an aqueous coating composition comprising the acrylic polyester resin and a packaging coated with the composition.

There is described an aqueous coating composition, the aqueous coating composition comprising an acrylic polyester resin, obtainable by grafting an acrylic polymer and a polyester material, the polyester material being obtainable by polymerizing: (i) a polyacid component, with (ii) a polyol component. At least one of the polyacid component and/or the polyol component comprises a functional monomer operable to impart functionality on to the polyester resin, such that an acrylic polymer may be grafted with the polyester material via the use of said functionality. The coating composition further containing a crosslinking material, wherein the crosslinking material comprises material according to formula (I); as shown in claim; wherein Ris selected from aryl (such as Cto Caryl), or aralkyl (such as Cto Caralkyl); Rto Rare each independently hydrogen, alkyl (such as Cto Calkyl), aryl (such as Cto Caryl), aralkyl (such as Cto Caralkyl) or &#x2014;CHROR; wherein Rand Rare each independently hydrogen, alkyl (such as Cto Calkyl), aryl (such as Cto Caryl), aralkyl (such as Cto Caralkyl), alkoxyalkyl (such as Cto Calkoxyalkyl) or an alkaryl (such as Cto Calkaryl); wherein at least one of Rto R, is &#x2014;CHROR, suitably all of Rto R, are &#x2014;CHROR.
