A first content stream comprising at least one content processing location is buffered in a first buffer, wherein the first buffer is associated with a first processing delay parameter. A second content stream is buffered in a second buffer, the second content stream comprising at least one content processing location, the second buffer being associated with a second processing delay parameter that is different from the first processing delay parameter. The first content stream is processed at the at least one content processing location of the first content stream at a first content processing time based on the first processing delay parameter. The second content stream is processed at the at least one content processing location of the second content stream at a second content processing time based on the second processing delay parameter.

A content stream comprising one or more video frames is received. The content stream is buffered in a buffer, wherein the buffer allows simultaneous read access to the content stream at a plurality of locations. One or more video frames of the content stream are transmitted from the buffer to a first device associated with a first subscriber beginning at a first location in the buffer based on a first transmission delay parameter. One or more video frames of the content stream are transmitted from the buffer to a second device associated with a second subscriber beginning at a second location in the buffer based on a second transmission delay parameter.

Described are computer-based methods and apparatuses, including computer program products, for policy-based content insertion. A client device transmits to a content server a request for the delivery of content. The content server modifies the request based on an ingress policy. The content server transmits the modified request to a second server where the second server processes the request. The second server transmits a reply to the modified request to the content server. The reply includes a content insertion instruction. The content server transmits the content to the client device based on the content insertion instruction and/or one or more egress policies.

Methods and apparatus for providing content delivery instructions to a content server

In one example, multimedia content is requested from a plurality of storage modules. Each storage module retrieves the requested parts, which are typically stored on a plurality of storage devices at each storage module. Each storage module determines independently when to retrieve the requested parts of the data file from storage and transmits those parts from storage to a data queue. Based on a capacity of a delivery module and/or the data rate associated with the request, each storage module transmits the parts of the data file to the delivery module. The delivery module generates a sequenced data segment from the parts of the data file received from the plurality of storage modules and transmits the sequenced data segment to the requester.

Described are computer-based methods and apparatuses, including computer program products, for input queued content switching using a playlist. A retrieval sequence is generated using a plurality of content requests based on content location information. A first portion of content is requested to be queued at a first content source, and a second portion of content is requested to be queued at a second content source. A content stream of the first portion and the second portion of content is generated using the retrieval sequence. The generating includes selecting the first portion of content from a queue associated with the first content source and transferring the first portion of content to an output buffer, then terminating transfer of the first portion of content and initiating transfer of the second portion of content from a queue associated with the second content source. The portion of content in the output buffer is transmitted to a client device.

Described are computer-based methods and apparatuses, including computer program products, for dynamic rate adjustment to splice video streams. A splicer receives a first compressed video stream of bits and buffers the first video stream of bits in a first buffer. The splicer receives a second compressed video stream of bits to splice into the first compressed video stream. The splicer buffers the second compressed video stream of bits in a second buffer. The splicer determines a departure time for a splice in-point of the second compressed video stream of bits. The splicer adjusts a rate of the first compressed video stream of bits, a rate of the second compressed video stream of bits, or both to achieve the departure time.

Dynamic rate adjustment to splice compressed video streams

Described are computer-based methods and apparatuses, including computer program products, for statistical multiplexing of compressed video streams. A deadline of a packet of a compressed video stream is computed based on a program clock reference value of the packet. A plurality of packets, which includes the packet, is sorted based on deadlines corresponding to the packets. A next packet from the sorted plurality of packets is selected, the next packet having a corresponding deadline nearest to a system clock time. The next packet is transmitted.

Statistical multiplexing of compressed video streams

A system for connecting a circuit network with a packet network. The system includes a packet switch fabric, a circuit network server, and a packet network server. The circuit network server has a first and second port. The first port of the circuit network server sends and receives circuit-based signals with the circuit network. The second port of the circuit network server sends and receives packet-based signals having packets with the packet switch fabric. The circuit network server also includes a plurality of digital signal processors. A digital signal processor performs packet adaptation and subsequent to the packet adaption a second at least one digital signal processor performs signal processing. The packet network server has a first port for sending and receiving packet-based signals with the packet switch fabric and a second port for sending and receiving packet-based signals with the packet network. The packet switch fabric is capable of transferring packet-based signals among the packet network server and the circuit network server, and among the circuit network server and a second circuit network server.

Apparatus and method for a telephony gateway

To determine when to service a cell queue in an ATM network, a cell scheduler can use an ideal service interval time. The ideal service interval time of each cell queue is the reciprocal of the bandwidth assigned to that cell queue. An interval based cell scheduler is then initialized by setting a time reference to zero and setting a next service time for each queue to the queue's ideal service interval. The cell scheduler then enters a repeating loop. During each iteration of the loop, the first nonempty cell queue having the smallest next service time value is selected. The selected queue is serviced and its next service time is updated by adding its ideal service interval. The time reference value is also updated. If all the queues are empty, then an idle time slot is allowed to pass. The cell queues may consists of queue groups. For example, several queues can be gathered into a queue group that assigned a single ideal service time. Within this queue group, each queue may be serviced equally using a fair queuing system.

A system and method for connecting a circuit network with a packet network. In one embodiment, the system contains a packet switch fabric, a circuit network server, a packet network server and a signal processing server. The circuit network server can send and receive circuit-based signals with the circuit network and can also send and receive packet-based signals with the packet switch fabric. The circuit network server has a digital signal processor which provides packet adaptation. The packet network server can send and receive packet-based signals with the packet switch fabric and can send and receive packet-based signals with the packet network. The signal processing server can send and receive packet-based signals with the packet switch fabric and has a digital signal processor for performing signal processing on the packet-based signals. The packet switch fabric transfers packet-based signals among the packet network server, the signal processing server, and the circuit network server.

A remote access server and method for using the remote access server in a packet network. In one embodiment, the remote access server includes a packet switch fabric, a packet network server and a dial access server. The packet network server has a first port for sending and receiving packet-based signals with the packet switch fabric and a second port for sending and receiving packet-based signals with the packet network. The dial access server has a port for sending and receiving packet-based signals with the packet switch fabric and the dial access server has a first digital signal processor for performing signal processing on the packet-based signals. The packet switch fabric transfers packet-based signals among the packet network server, and the dial access server. In a further embodiment, the dial access server includes a second digital signal processor for performing signal processing on the packet-based signals. The first digital signal processor may be a channel signal processor and the second digital signal processor may be a packet protocol processor. The signal processors perform remote access signal processing. The packet protocol processor may perform dial-up Internet protocol support. The channel signal processor may perform modulation and demodulation of packet-based signals, transcoding of packet-based signals, and automatic modem adaptation.

Apparatus and method for a remote access server

A high-capacity multistage switching system includes a second stage ATM switch that interconnects multiple lower-capacity switch modules. The switching system dynamically establishes a connection between the switch ports of two switch modules, using as part of the connection a permanent virtual connection, i.e., a pre-established connection path, through the ATM switch. Each switch module includes one or more switch ports, an ATM interface card and a time-division-multiplexed 'TDM' bus that transfers user data between the switch ports and the ATM interface card. A system controller dynamically establishes connections between two given switch ports establishing one or more virtual trunks to transfer the user data between the TDM buses of the switch modules and cell payloads of ATM cells that are directed over the appropriate pre-established connection path through the ATM switch. The system controller then assigns to the connections transmit and receive timeslots on the TDM bus and octets in virtual trunk structures that are associated with the virtual trunks. The ATM card retrieves user data from the transmit timeslots and places the data in the octets of the virtural trunk structures, and then assembles the structures in ATM cells that are directed along the selected connection path. An ATM card that receives an ATM cell disassembles the cell into the constituent virtual trunk structures and retrieves user data from the octets of the structures and places the data on the TDM bus in the receive timeslots.
