The present invention relates to an interface device and a method for communication between a medical device and a computer system. In some embodiments, the interface device comprises a conversion device and/or a processor-transceiver and a memory in electrical communication with the conversion device, wherein the memory contains data to instruct the conversion device and/or the processor transceiver how to communicate with the medical device.

A multirate transmission system for transmitting parallel input data from a first location to a second location includes a transmitter portion and a receiver portion. The transmitter portion receives the parallel data, including the information related to a parallel data clock and stores the data in a buffer where it is subsequently read and serialized for transmission on a serial data link to the receiver portion where it is deserialized, including recovery of the parallel data clock in the serialized data stream. The receiver portion stores the parallel data in a buffer where it is read at a data rate corresponding to the parallel data clock of the incoming parallel data. The parallel data at the transmitter portion is associated with generated control characters when parallel data is not read from the buffer associated with the transmitter portion.

A system for extending in length a connection from a universal serial bus (USB) peripheral device to a computer beyond the length enabled by the device hardware. The system includes: a USB host emulator, for polling the USB peripheral device according to a USB standard protocol, for receiving input provided by the USB peripheral device in response to the polling, for providing the input in a form suitable for transmission via a communications channel, such as serialized form for transmission via a copper or spread spectrum form for communication as a radiofrequency signal; the communications channel, having an input end and an output end, responsive to the input at the input end, for providing the input at the output end; a USB device emulator, responsive to the input at the output end of the communications channel, and further responsive to polling from the computer, and in response to the polling, for reforming the input into USB format and providing the USB formatted input to the computer according to a USB protocol.

A firearm, such as a shotgun, is normally-enabled at all times for firing. An authorized user, such as a police officer, wears a transmitter that transmits signal energy in all directions. The transmitter may be worn by the authorized user on the user's person. The transmitter transmits a 'disable' system that is received by a corresponding signal receiver built into the firearm only when the muzzle of the firearm is pointed in the direction of the authorized user. That is, the receiver has a narrow angular spatial range of signal reception. In this way, if the firearm is taken away from the authorized user, or the authorized user accidentally points the firearm at his/her person, then the firearm will be disabled automatically from firing by reception of the 'disable' signal sent by the transmitter worn by the authorized user.
