Method and system for making 3D glass, glass-ceramic and ceramic objects

Described herein is a substrate including a central longitudinal axis, a first support web, and a second support web. A sinuous web may be positioned between the first support web and the second support web. The sinuous web may include transverse web portions and bridging web portions, where the bridging web portions alternatively connect ends of adjacent transverse web portions. The sinuous web may be connected to the first support web by support legs extending between bridging web portions and a surface of the first support web. The sinuous web may be connected to the second support web by support legs extending between bridging web portions and a surface of the second support web. A support leg length to distance between transverse web portions ratio may be from about 1.0 to about 4.0.

The present disclosure relates to radial wall flow particulate filters comprised of ceramic material. The filters include a filter body that has a plurality of adjacent troughs circumferentially arranged around a longitudinal axis.

A fast light off flow-through ceramic substrate is provided that is particularly adapted for use as a catalytic converter. The substrate is formed from a body of ceramic material having axially opposing inlet and outlet ends for receiving and expelling the flow of automotive exhaust gas, respectively. The body contains a network of walls coated with a catalyst that define axially-oriented flow-through cell channels. The average thermal mass (ATM) of a first axial region of the walls adjacent to the inlet end is at least 20% less than the average thermal mass (ATM) of all of the walls. The lower average thermal mass of the walls in the first region advantageously shortens the light off time for the catalyst within the substrate to effectively neutralize automotive pollutants. The reduction of the average thermal mass in only the first axial region of the walls advantageously maintains the strength of the resulting body of ceramic material, and further increases the cool down time of the body.

A method for forming honeycomb structures, such as wall-flow honeycomb filters, which utilizes extrusion of multiple material supplies at once. Such methods may be used to form intermittent plugs or other structures in the cell channels during the extrusion process, for example. A die assembly is provided which includes secondary feedholes machined in the pins for intermittently or periodically injecting secondary material (e.g., plug material) into the cell channels of the honeycomb structure while it is being extruded.

Powder mixtures and a method of forming and shaping the mixtures. The method involves compounding the components of powder materials, binder, solvent for the binder, surfactant, and non-solvent with respect to at least the binder, the solvent, and the powder materials. The non-solvent is lower in viscosity than the binder combined with the solvent. The solvent is present in an amount that is less than the amount that would be present otherwise. The components are mixed and plasticized, and shaped to form a green body. The choice of components results in improved wet green strength in the green body. The method is especially useful for extrusion processing of aqueous binder systems such as water and cellulose ethers and hydrophobic non-solvents, to form structures such as honeycombs. In the body, the ratio, upon subsequent firing, of the isostatic strength to the A-axis strength is at least about 20% higher than in bodies made without the mixture composition of the invention. A honeycomb body having a ratio of the isostatic strength to the A-axis strength of at least about 0.33 upon firing.

The instant invention discloses a method for forming glass/polymer alloy or composite pellets of a uniform shape, and exhibiting an increased density and pellet integrity/strength. The pellets are formed by melt-blending and extruding a semi-molten strand of the glass/polymer alloy or composite and subsequently compressing and cutting the strand into pellets at a predetermined pelletizing temperature. The predetermined pelletizing temperature is that temperature at which the glass/polymer alloy or composite extruded strand is still semi-molten and deformable and at which the so-formed pellets will maintain the shape imparted to them.
