A modular flow battery includes a battery stack container housing a plurality of redox flow battery stacks in fluid communication with at least one pair of electrolyte containers including an anolyte container for holding an anolyte and a catholyte container for holding a catholyte. Additional pairs of electrolyte containers can be connected to the battery stack container to increase an amount of energy that can be stored by the modular flow battery system. Respective housings enclosing each of the battery stack container and the electrolyte containers are configured for operation in a stacked configuration. In this manner, the energy storage capacity of the modular flow battery system can be further increased with substantially no increase in a lateral area occupied by the system.

Modular and scalable flow battery system

A flow battery system can include at least one pair of electrolyte storage, a first battery stack, and a second battery stack. The electrolyte storage pair can include an anolyte storage configured to contain an anolyte solution, and a catholyte storage configured to contain a catholyte solution. The first battery stack can be fluid communication with the electrolyte storage pair. The first battery stack can also be configured to receive electrical energy from a power source and to facilitate redox reactions storing the received electrical power as chemical energy by the anolyte and catholyte solutions. The second battery stack can be in fluid communication with the at least one pair of electrolyte storage. The second battery stack can also be configured to supply electrical energy to an electrical load, and to facilitate redox reactions releasing chemical energy stored by the anolyte and catholyte solutions as electrical energy to the load.

Flow battery-based charging systems

Systems and methods providing modular and scalable flow batteries are disclosed. The modular design can utilize the ability of flow batteries to separate power, provided by a battery stack, from energy, provided by a stored electrolyte. Power of the system can be determined by a number of battery cell stacks, while stored energy capacity of the system can be determined by how much electrolyte is available for use by the battery cell stacks. Catholyte and anolyte solutions can be stored in pipes having an adjustable length. Electrolyte storage capacity can be increased by increasing the length of the pipes by an amount sufficient to provide a desired increase in electrolyte storage. Alternatively, electrolyte storage capacity can be decreased by decreasing the length of the pipes.

Large scale flow battery system

A flow battery system is provided that has at least one cell stack and at least a pair of storage containers or tanks connected to the at least one cell stack. Each of the storage containers is formed from a rigid (e.g., metal) shell and includes a liner directly bonded to inner walls of the rigid shell and forming an enclosure configured to retain a liquid electrolyte. The electrolyte can be an anolyte or catholyte. In the assembled configuration, the metal shell of the storage container provides secondary containment whereas the liner directly bonded thereto provides primary containment. The flow battery system includes a fault detection system configured to detect a presence of a fault or leak and further to determine a location of that leak in the flow battery system, such as a storage container or a specific portion of the storage container.

Systems and methods for electrolyte storage and detecting faults in flow batteries

A modular UPS system is provided wherein UPS systems may be constructed using a number of different frame components. In one example, a core UPS frame is provided that can accept different combinations of power and battery modules, and an extension frame is provided that can be combined with the core frame to provide a larger UPS system. According to one example, both the core and extension frame types may be used in either a standalone or rack-mounted configuration. Another aspect relates to packaging of UPS components such that the UPS frame need not include serviceable items. In another aspect, a rail system is provided that allows for easier installation of heavy components into rack-mount systems.

Modular UPS

At least one aspect of the invention is directed to a ventilation device. The ventilation device includes a frame configured to be mounted to a barrier, and a plurality of air moving devices configured to be coupled to the frame and configured to draw air from a first side of the barrier to a second side of the barrier. The ventilation unit further includes a control device coupled to the plurality of air moving devices and configured to detect an out of tolerance condition of one of the plurality of air moving devices and control another one of the plurality of air moving devices to increase airflow though the another one of the plurality of air moving devices in response to the out of tolerance condition.

Method and apparatus for providing cooling air to equipment

An improved battery, monitoring circuit and method for communicating with the battery is provided. Such batteries and communication methods are particularly useful in UPS systems that use such batteries to provide back-up power to electrical loads. In one aspect, performance, manufacturing, trend and/or other data are stored in non-volatile memory of the battery and are communicated to an external system such as a UPS. In another aspect, a method for communicating via single-wire interface is provided. In one aspect, a same interface is used to communicate with both conventional batteries and improved batteries having increased monitoring capabilities.

Method and apparatus for monitoring energy storage devices

An equipment storage rack includes a housing defining an interior region. The housing has an exterior. At least one piece of electronic equipment is supported by the housing within the interior region. A management system is adapted to monitor and display conditions of the equipment storage rack. In a certain configuration, the management system includes a controller unit mounted within the interior region of the housing, a display unit coupled to the controller unit and mounted on the exterior of the housing, and at least one monitoring device, coupled with the controller unit, to monitor at least one parameter of the equipment storage rack. Methods of controlling an equipment storage rack are further disclosed.

A terminal block for use in an uninterruptible power supply comprises a first portion that includes a plurality of stalls, each of the plurality of stalls having an aperture, and at least one socket positioned in the aperture, the at least one socket arranged to accept a wire from internal portions of the uninterruptible power supply, and a second portion removably connectable to the first portion, the second portion including a plurality of stalls, a plurality of electrical ports, an electrical port positioned in each of the plurality of stalls, and at least one connector pin positioned within one of the plurality of stalls to connect to the at least one socket through the aperture.
