An I/O connector assembly configured for making a cabled connection to an interior portion of a printed circuit board for at least some signals passing through the I/O connector. The I/O connector assembly may be assembled by mounting a cage to a printed circuit board. A receptacle connector, including cables extending from a rear of the connector, may be inserted through an opening in the top or rear of the cage. The receptacle connector may be positioned in the cage by at least one retention member on the cage. A plug, mating to the receptacle connector, also may be positioned by a retention member on the cage. Positioning both the plug and receptacle relative to the cage reduces the tolerance stackup of the assembly and enables the connectors to be designed with shorter wipe length, which enables higher frequency operation.

I/O connector configured for cabled connection to the midboard

A shielded I/O connector that supports high density connections. The shielded connector has a cage with channels. At least a first channel is configured to receive a transceiver such that it may be plugged into a port in a connector housing at an end of the cage. At least a second channel is configured to dissipate heat by enabling air to flow adjacent the transceiver. The rate of air flow in the second channel is increased with a channel in the connector housing that connects with the second channel. Air may exit the housing channel through openings in rear surfaces of the cage or through openings that bound the housing channel.

High performance stacked connector

An input/output connector system with a cable assembly that routes signals over a circuit board to which a receptacle connector is attached. A cage housing the receptacle has a channel with an opening at one end for mounting in a panel opening. The cage has an opening in a top surface through which a plug may be inserted into the channel to mate with the receptacle. The cage may be formed with one or more keys that engage channels on the plug to constrain motion of a plug inserted through the top surface to a direction perpendicular with the circuit board until the plug is inserted sufficiently into the cage that it can slide towards the receptacle without damaging the plug or receptacle. The plug may have one or more latch components on the sides, which engage with corresponding latch components on the cage when the plug is slid into engagement with the receptacle connector.

Top-loaded electronic connection system

A shielded I/O connector that supports high density connections. The shielded connector has a cage with channels. At least a first channel is configured to receive a transceiver such that it may be plugged into a port in a connector housing at an end of the cage. At least a second channel is configured to dissipate heat by enabling air to flow adjacent the transceiver. The rate of air flow in the second channel is increased with a diverter at the end of the second channel to smooth the flow of air through the second channel and out of one or more orifices. The diverter may be simply formed by shaping the housing of a connector at an end of the cage. The orifices may be formed by channel in the connector housing and openings in surfaces of the cage that bound the second channel or the housing channel.

An electrical connector is disclosed having a multi-piece connector housing. The housing pieces may be configured to fit together with separation between interior surfaces of the separately manufactured housing pieces. This separation selectively introduces pockets of air adjacent portions of the mating contacts within the connector. The packets of air may be preferentially positioned to provide a more uniform impedance along the length of a mating contact. The separation may be introduced near the mating interface of a receptacle connector, for example, to counter the effects of changes in contact geometry at the mating interface.

Embodiments of an electrical connector assembly are disclosed. The electrical connector assembly can include an electrical connector having a connector housing and a leadframe supported by the connector housing. The leadframe includes an electrically conductive ground plate that includes a drain wire connection tabs that can attach to drain wires of respective electrical cables. The electrical connector assembly can further include a cable clip that supports the plurality of cables. The electrical connector assembly can further include a cable guide that directs the plurality of cables of cables through the cable clip along a desired direction.

An electrical connector assembly can include a polarization member that is configured to prevent first and second electrical connectors from being mated to each other in an incorrect orientation. The polarization member abuts the first electrical connector such that the first electrical connector provides structural support to the polarization member when the second electrical contacts the polarization member. The polarization member is received by the second electrical connector when the second electrical connector is mated to the first electrical connector in a predetermined orientation.

An electrical connector lock can include a mounting member configured to attach to a substrate. The electrical connector lock can also include force cancellation member that cancels forces generated on an electrical component by a mated component.
