A system and method for establishing and retrieving data based upon global indices established on the date of first use by a user. The system uses a distributed data name service (DDNS) which uniquely identifies users based upon the unique ID of devices on the system combined with the date and time of first use. Both the unique device ID and the unique user ID's are stored on servers of the system. This unique user ID generated is used for all subsequent uses of the system by the user. Searching for data generated by devices of the system relating to a particular user is accomplished by searching for instances of the user ID on servers of the system rather than by searching for the data itself. A simplified data transport protocol allows for the transfer of data from one location to another after the data is located.

The method comprises administering methylnaltrexone or another quaternary derivative of noroxymorphone to a patient prior to the administration of an opioid or after the onset of side effects induced by the administration of an opioid, wherein the methylnaltrexone or quaternary derivative is administered orally in an enterically coated form.

A method of preventing or treating an opioid-induced side effect in a patient who has been chronically taking opioids, the method comprising administering a quaternary derivative of noroxymorphone in an amount sufficient to prevent or treat the side effect in the patient, but which amount would be insufficient to treat a patient with the same opioid-induced side effect who had not chronically been administered opioids.

The present invention monitors a physiological process intrinsic to humans and which measures directly the approach of a sleep state. When sleep onset is detected, the subject is restored to a fully awake state by an alert mechanism. Sleep onset is determined by monitoring EEG and EMG signals of the subject with a bispectral index monitor and applying an analysis algorithm to the index values output by the monitor. As a person tires, the value of their bispectral index begins to drop and then oscillate back and forth between two discrete levels. This pattern is consistent among various subjects and indicates an early warning of impending sleep, before a dangerous loss of vigilance has occurred.

In practice, a material is impregnated with methemoglobin and attached to a patient's skin. A barrier means located between the impregnated material and the patient's skin allows for the transfer of cyanide gas from the patient into the material. However, this barrier means does not allow for the transfer of the methemoglobin from the impregnated material into the patient's skin. The material is monitored for photometric change, and, where a change indicative of cyanide poinsoning is present, appropriate treatment is administered.

A method of detecting and quantifying cyanide concentration in a patient, by monitoring photometric changes resulting from the transformation of methemoglobin to cyanomethemoglobin. The present invention provides for a means of cyanide poisoning assessment in patients using the affinity of methemoglobin for cyanide to assess the photometric changes resulting from methemoglobin converting to cyanomethemoglobin, as an indicator of cyanide concentration in a patient. Appropriate corrective action can then be promptly taken.

System and method for developing and selecting a customized wellness plan

A system utilizing a software program used to write other software application programs for the implementation of guideline applications for use in situations where a qualification decision or next course of action determination must be made. The system uses questions with limited choice answers. Data provided in answer to the questions causes a second program application to be automatically generated based on the answers. The second application then elicits responses in an interactive manner. Qualification decisions and courses of action are suggested as an output of the second application. Means are provided for evaluating the reliability of the suggestions based on consistency of answers and fatigue of the user. Means are also provided for editing either application program.

The device is controlled by a pre-programmed microcomputer on a chip, and a ROM-based, removeable and replaceable control program which not only collects, but also analyzes the patient's answers and makes appropriate recommendations based on those answers, and drives a remote printer or computer terminal.
