The present invention relates to a sizing composition that, when applied to paper substrate, creates a substrate, preferably suitable for inkjet printing, having increased print density, print sharpness, low HST, and/or image dry time, the substrate preferably having high brightness and reduced color-to-color bleed as well. In addition, the present invention relates to a method of reducing the HST of a paper substrate by applying the sizing composition to at least one surface thereof. Further, the application relates to methods of making and using the sizing composition, as well as methods of making and using the paper containing the sizing composition.

A hydrophobic coated paper substrate formed from a paper substrate of paper fibers and internal sizing agent, a surface size layer of one or more surface sizing starches, optionally one or more non-starch hydrophobic surface sizing agents, and optionally one or more paper pigments, on at least one surface of the paper substrate, and at least one hydrophobic pigmented coating layer of a paper pigment component and a hydrophobic pigment binder component on at least one surface size layer. The substrate coating has an amount of a coating pigment sufficient to impart a Parker Print Smoothness value of at least about 4 to the at least one surface and is dispersed in a water-swellable coating pigment binder matrix in a coating pigment to binder matrix weight ratio of at least about 2:1. The coating pigment has larger porous coating pigment particles, and smaller coating pigment particles in a weight ratio of at least about 0.2:1.
