A mechanism for mounting a foldable-bed unit in an article of furniture is described. A pair of mounting plates each including a first and second bracket is mounted on opposite ends of a cavity in the article of furniture. The brackets include a U-shaped slot configured to accept a fixture having an enlarged head. A retaining tab is included within one or more of the brackets to retain the fixture therein. The first brackets are located rearwardly of the second brackets and at an angle such that the slot therein is tilted forwardly. The second brackets are oriented to provide a generally vertical orientation to the slots therein. A foldable-bed unit having fixtures corresponding to each of the brackets is installed into the article of furniture by inserting corresponding fixtures into the first brackets. The foldable-bed unit is rotated to insert the remaining fixtures into the second brackets.

Mechanism for mounting a foldable-bed unit in an article of furniture

A mattress of a sofa bed contains a portion which is collapsible and portions which are conventional and non-collapsible. The collapsible and non-collapsible portions are hinged to fold within a sofa bed frame.

Collapsible sofa bed mattress

A sofa bed having a foldable bed frame including a main section, center section and front section which are coplanar with one another when the frame is in the bed configuration. A mattress is supported by the foldable frame and folds with it when the bed is closed or stored in the sofa frame. When the foldable bed frame is partially folded, the front section does not fully compress the mattress between the main and front sections. When the partially folded bed frame is moved to the fully folded position inside the sofa frame, a series of links causes the front section of the bed frame to move to a horizontal position and fully compress the mattress. In this fashion, the stored energy in the mattress is reduced when the frame is partially open so as to reduce the possibility of injury to the operator.

A sofa ottoman assembly includes a lazy tong linkage having a bracket at one end which is connected to the front rail of the sofa on which the assembly is installed and a second bracket which supports the ottoman. An actuating assembly includes a handle to be mounted on the side rail of the sofa and a number of links and levers connected between the handle and the lazy tong linkage which enables the party seated on the sofa to extend and retract the ottoman. The lazy tong linkage has a narrow side profile so as not to significantly increase the front to back dimension of the sofa on which it is mounted, and the actuating assembly is disposed closely adjacent the side rail of the sofa frame so as not to subtract from the space for a folding bed frame and mattress within the sofa frame.

A sofa bed having a friction damper on the main angle of the bed frame, which prevents the front tube and front legs of the frame from rapidly swinging forward as the frame is opened to prevent injury to the operator.
