In one embodiment, the method includes encrypting, at a device, data with a first key, and forming a message that includes a device identifier and the encrypted data. The device identifier identifies the device. A signaling message is formed that includes a class identifier, the message and an action code. The class identifier identifies a group of devices to which one or more devices belong. The action code indicates the type of data, and may be part of the message. The signaling message is sent to a network, for example, a wireless network. The wireless network identifies and routes the message portion of the signaling message based on the class identifier. And, using the class identifier and perhaps a device identifier, the wireless network may signal the device to change an operating parameter.

The signaling messaging is encapsulated in a container for transmission over the signaling interface. An identifier is associated with the container to indicate that it encapsulates the signaling messaging. When the identifier is detected at the first node, the container is sent over the interface to the second node. In one method in accordance with the invention, the first technology type is WiMAX and the identifier is a special service flow identifier. This may be detected at an Access Services Network Gateway (ASN GW), for example. A method in accordance with the invention thus permits the use of logical radio channels for encapsulating inter-technology signaling.

The method provides for a first network controller, operating according to a first radio technology, to form and send a relay message to a second network controller, operating according to a different, second radio technology. A method is provided for controlling communications to and from an access terminal during a hand off period. A smart packet filter is used to identify a packet flow, apply a first treatment to a packet flow based on its destination, and transmit the first treated packet flow along a first route to the access terminal. During a hand off, the packet stream is duplicated, a second treatment is applied to the packet flow and the second treated duplicate packet flow is transmitted to the access terminal via a second route.

Service feature administration for a wireless terminal is provided by a packet data feature server in a home network that is connected to a packet data network. During call setup on behalf of the wireless terminal, the feature server is accessed via the packet data network to manage service features that are specific to the wireless terminal.

Architecture to support service features for wireless calls in a wireless telecommunication system

Delivery of short audio communications to remote end user devices uses discrete message-oriented service messages for delivery of the audio messages. Audio information is captured, encoded by means of audio compression technology, and stored at a message center. Alternatively, the audio information may be stored in an uncompressed format and compressed immediately before delivery. The compressed audio information is transmitted by means of Short Message Service or another discrete message-oriented service to the end user device, where it is decompressed and played to the recipient. Message delivery can be accomplished in parallel with some other ongoing activity at the end user device. The major fields in a Short Message Service message used to carry encoded audio information are a Type of Data field, including information on the type of translator needed to decompress the message field, a Short Message Identifier, a Length field, and the coded audio information. If the audio information is too large to be contained in a single Short Message, segmentation and reassembly techniques commonly known in the art are applied to break the information into segments, each of which is placed into a separate Short Message having the fields: Type of Data; Short Message Identifier; Total Segments; Number of Enclosed Segment; Segment Length; and Coded Audio Information Segment. At the end user device, the Short Message can be stored until the end user listens to the audio information. The intervening network can be a radio link, the Internet, or some other network. The invention may also be utilized by a mobile user to send short audio messages to a message center and/or a second end user device.

A handoff method and apparatus are disclosed for use in a wireless communication network in which a primary base station servicing a call directly selects a handoff candidate base station based in part on provided base station identity and address information.
