A method for modifying a solar thermal power plant operating on conventional oil based technology into a hybrid solar thermal power plant includes: providing an oil-based solar thermal power plant, which includes a solar collection system with at least one radiation absorber tube containing a heat transfer oil to be heated by the solar collection system; providing a molten salts solar thermal power plant, which includes a solar collection system to heat a molten salts mixture; and coupling the respective plants such that the hybrid solar thermal power plant is configured to heat medium temperature steam generated by the oil based solar power plant by the molten salts mixture thereby producing high temperature steam and subsequently supplying it to a steam turbine to generate electricity.

Use of solar energy for the production of synthesis gas from carbonaceous material. An aqueous dispersion of carbonaceous material is injected into a reactor in the form of a shower or a jet of droplets, and the droplets are allowed to sink inside the reactor across a high-temperature focal zone projected into the reactor by means of a system for the concentration of solar radiation. The residence time inside the reactor is adjustable by means of a countercurrent gas flow or by the injection of two or more discrete droplet jets in an impinging jet arrangement.

Solar energy gasification of solid carbonaceous material in liquid

The disclosure concerns various improvements in a solar energy plant of the kind in which incoming solar radiation is concentrated by a Fresnel reflector, i.e. a field of concentrating mirrors, and the concentrated radiation is focused into a solar receiver. By one improvement a dielectric mirror is provided at a suitable level above the solar collector, to reflect the concentrated solar radiation into the collector. By another disclosed improvement a plurality of non-imaging secondary concentrators arranged in concentric zones is provided intermediary between the dielectric mirror and receiver. The invention relates to a process for the production of optically selective surfaces for use in solar collectors, having a predetermined ratio of absorbance .alpha..sub.s to emmitance .epsilon. of at least 10, which comprises effecting an anodic oxidation of copper, or copper applied to any substrate metal, in an alkaline bath at an elevated temperature between 50.degree. and 85.degree. C., preferably 70.degree. to 85.degree. C., and at a current density of above 1 mA/cm.sup.2 and up to 40 mA/cm.sup.2 until an increase of resistance is experienced. Substrate metals may be copper, copper plated steel, copper plated galvanized iron, copper plated nickel, nickel plated steel to which a layer of copper is applied, and the like.
