A method for monitoring a power system includes receiving, from at least one component monitor in communication with components of the power system, a first set of readings for at least one of the power system components at an input of a central processing unit. The method also includes providing the first set of readings to be displayed in a graphical format on a user interface. A user selection of a portion of the first set of readings, and at least one user classification of the portion of the first set of readings, is received. Portions of the first set of readings are identified and removed based on the at least one user classification to generate a modified set of readings. The modified set of readings is classified by at least one characteristic, and the at least one characteristic is detected in a second set of readings.

Systems and methods for monitoring a power system

A system comprises a central processing unit configured to receive, from at least one component monitor, a first set of readings for a component of a power system; provide the first set of readings to be displayed as a graph on a user interface; receive, from the user interface, a user selection of a portion of the first set of readings, and at least one user classification of the portion of the first set of readings; determine at least one characteristic of the portion of the first set of readings; detect the at least one characteristic in a second set of readings; and apply the user classification to the second set of readings.

The power meter having fault tolerance may enhance the monitoring process by transitioning from a faulty power monitoring device to a non-faulty power monitoring device without losing or corrupting power management data.

A power management architecture for an electrical power distribution system, or portion thereof, is disclosed. The architecture includes multiple intelligent electronic devices ('IED's') distributed throughout the power distribution system to manage the flow and consumption of power from the system using real time communications. Power management application software and/or hardware components operate on the IED's and the back-end servers and inter-operate via the network to implement a power management application. The architecture provides a scalable and cost effective framework of hardware and software upon which such power management applications can operate to manage the distribution and consumption of electrical power by one or more utilities/suppliers and/or customers which provide and utilize the power distribution system. Autonomous communication on the network between IED's, back-end servers and other entities coupled with secure networks, themselves interconnected, via firewalls, by one or more unsecure networks, is facilitated by the use of a back-channel protocol. The back-channel protocol allows a device coupled with a secure network to solicit communications from a device on the unsecure network, thereby opening a back-channel through the firewall through which the unsecure network device may send unsolicited messages to the secure network device. Communications between multiple secure networks is accomplished using a unsecure device on an intermediary unsecure network to relay communications between the secure network devices using the protocol described above.

Power quality detection, monitoring, reporting, recording and communication in a revenue accuracy electrical power meter is disclosed. Transient events are detected by monitoring the wave shape of the electrical power and comparing deviations to a known threshold. Sags and Swells are detected by computing root mean square value over a rolling window and comparing the computed value with a known threshold. Harmonic frequencies and symmetrical components are quantified by a known algorithm and compared with a known threshold. Incoming waveforms are stored to memory. All recorded and computed data is moved to non-volatile storage via direct memory access transfer in the event that a power quality event jeopardizes the operating power of the meter. Further, the meter provides a power supply utilizing high and low capacitive storage banks to supply sufficient energy to survive short duration power quality events which jeopardize the meter's operating power.

Systems and methods for monitoring power in a conductor. A flex circuit may include multiple layers including a voltage sensing layer, a coil layer, and a ground layer. The coil layer includes traces that form a coil structure around a conductor when the flex circuit is wrapped around the conductor. The coil layer generates a voltage that may be integrated to determine a current in the conductor. When the flex circuit is wrapped around the conductor, the voltage sensing layer is closest to the conductor. The voltage sensing layer forms a capacitor with the conductor. Using an adjustable capacitive voltage divider, the voltage of the conductor may be determined from a voltage signal received from the voltage sensing layer.

Systems and methods for ensuring data integrity in a mesh network. A mesh network can include multiple RF devices. Transmitting quality data in or on the mesh network is improved using communication validation functions. The communication validation functions ensure a reliable communication network, preserve data during a network outage, and validate data. The communication validation functions can measure or control data quality within a communication and analysis network. The communication validation function operates to control data quality, for example, by measuring the quality of wireless links, ensuring the presence of redundant links, testing the ability of the mesh network to establish a backup communication path, generating alarms based on communication thresholds, tracking the communication path followed by communication packets, and identifying placement locations for additional RF devices.

A power management integrated circuit for monitoring a parameter of a power system includes sensor interface circuitry, first logic, at least one random access memory, second logic, and a communication interface. The sensor interface circuitry is operative to receive and process signals representative of voltage and current in a power system. The first logic is operative to receive the signals and produce at least one power parameter. The random access memory is operative to store the at least one power parameter. The second logic is operative to process at least one incoming communication packet and generate at least one outgoing communication packet encapsulating the power parameter. The communication interface is operative to process the at least one incoming communication packet and transmit the at least one outgoing communication packet. The power management integrated circuit may also include a geographic positioning system receiver and a real time clock.

A power management integrated circuit for monitoring a parameter of a power system includes: an analog front end operative to receive and at least one of amplify, attenuate and filter analog signals representative of at least one of voltage and current in a power system to produce modified analog signals; an analog to digital converter operative to produce digital signals; the logic coupled with the analog to digital converter operative to receive the digital signals and produce a power parameter and the logic includes a processor core; a random access memory coupled with the logic operative to store the power parameter and the logic is operative to implement a setpoint to detect when the power parameter is outside a determined range; and a digital output coupled with the first logic and the digital output is useable to control a switching circuit outside the power management integrated circuit.
