Apparatuses and methods for monitoring curing of photocurable material are disclosed. The methods generally include directing an ultraviolet cure light into a photocurable material, wherein the ultraviolet cure light causes the photocurable material to cure; directing a probe light into the photocurable material through an optical fiber during the cure; collecting a back reflection signal from the photocurable material with the optical fiber; and determining a refractive index change of the photocurable material during the cure.

Methods and apparatuses for monitoring the curing of a photocurable material

A cell culture article comprises virgin polystyrene disposed over at least a portion of a surface of an article main body. The article main body may be formed from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) such as reground or recycled polyethylene terephthalate. Methods of making such a cell culture article include applying a composition to a surface of an article main body, where the composition comprises virgin polystyrene having a thickness of 1 to 500 microns and the article main body is formed from glass, ceramic, metal or polymer.

Polymer surfaces for cell growth

A coating composition containing a radiation-curable component, a photoinitiator, and a UV absorber is described. The coating composition may be applied to an optical fiber and cured to form a coating. The UV absorber provides a protective function by inhibiting unintended curing of the coating that may occur upon exposure of the fiber to UV light during fiber processing. The spectral overlap of the photoinitiator and UV absorber is minimized to permit efficient photoinitiation of the curing reaction over one or more wavelengths. Photoinitiation may be excited by an LED source with a peak emission wavelength in the range from 360 nm-410 nm.

Optical fiber coating and composition with UV-absorbing additive

Described herein are laminate structures with enhanced sound-damping properties and mechanical properties. The laminates are composed of an interlayer structure disposed between a first glass substrate and a second glass substrate, wherein the interlayer is composed of a polymer layer designed such that sound attenuation or damping by the laminate is optimized. The laminates described herein may be used in vehicles or architectural panels. In one or more embodiments, the laminate may be disposed in an opening of a vehicle body. Where the vehicle body is an automobile, the laminate could be used as a windshield, a side window, sunroof or rear windshield. The body of some embodiments may include railcar body, or an airplane body. In other embodiments, the laminate may be used in architectural panels, which may include a window, an interior wall panel, a modular furniture panel, a backsplash, a cabinet panel, or an appliance panel.

Laminate structures with enhanced damping properties

One embodiment of the disclosure relates to an optical connector. The optical connector may include a ferrule, a waveguide, and an inorganic adhesive composition. The ferrule may include a fiber-receiving passage defining an inner surface. The inorganic adhesive composition may be disposed within the ferrule and in contact with the inner surface of the ferrule and the waveguide. The inorganic adhesive composition may include at least about 50% by weight of metal oxide.

Optical connectors with inorganic adhesives and methods for making the same

A radiation curable composition is disclosed that includes a curable cross-linker essentially free of urethane and urea functional groups, a curable diluent, and a non-radiation curable component comprising (thio)urethane and/or urea groups. Coated optical fibers having a primary coating formed from this radiation curable composition, as well as optical fiber ribbons that contain the coated optical fibers are disclosed. Methods of making the optical fibers and ribbons are also disclosed.

A ceramic precursor batch composition comprising inorganic ceramic-forming ingredients, a hydrophobically modified cellulose ether binder having a molecular weight less than or equal to about 300,000 g/mole and an aqueous solvent is provided. The ceramic precursor batch composition has a ratio of binder to aqueous solvent of less than about 0.32. The ceramic precursor batch composition may be used to increase the rate of extrusion of the composition. A method for increasing a rate of extrusion of a ceramic precursor batch composition is also disclosed.

A method of preventing gravity-induced deformation of a ceramic green body. The method comprises providing a ceramic green body and disposing the body in a fluid medium bath having a density that is greater than or equal to that of the ceramic green body. The green body is suspended and floats freely in the fluid medium, and deformation of the green body due to its own weight is prevented. Outer or peripheral portions of the ceramic green body may also be stiffened when the fluid medium bath comprises an aqueous salt solution comes into contact with the green body and causes gelation of a binder within the ceramic green body.

Method of preventing gravity-induced deformation of ceramic green bodies

A method of minimizing localized heating of, or minimizing signal losses across a source of loss in, an optical fiber used in transmission of a high power optical signal at an operating wavelength. These methods include the steps of: providing an optical fiber which comprises either (i) a coating characterized by an absorbance of less than about 4.5 dB/cm at the operating wavelength or (ii) a refractive index lower than the refractive index of a cladding layer of the optical fiber by more than about 3&#xd7;10at the operating wavelength, or (iii) both (i) and (ii); and transmitting a optical signal having a power greater than about 250 mW through the optical fiber, wherein the coating, cladding layer, or combination thereof are selected to minimize localized heating of the optical fiber or to result in a signal loss across a source of loss that is less than about 250 mW at the operating wavelength.

Method of preventing optical fiber failure in high power application

A new damage resistant and tolerant optical element is disclosed. Prior art solid or liquid host matrices are replaced by a soft crosslinked polymer or similar host material. The viscoelastic properties of the matrix host material are controlled during formation so that there are regions of different softness, of stiffness, within the matrix, to form a stiffness gradient. Preferably, the matrix will be softest at a preselected focal plane where maximum electromagnetic radiation or energy output may be expected. The host matrix is doped with an appropriate dopant having a concentration distribution, preferably such that the concentration of dopant is highest in the region where the host matrix material is most soft. Two important disclosed example embodiments are an optical limiter and a solid state dye laser.

Damage resistant and tolerant optical materials

A device for removing heat from a fiber-optic package having at least one optical element includes a terminated fiber for diverting excess optical power away from the optical element and an energy dissipating element having a capability to absorb the optical power from the terminated fiber and a high thermal conductivity sufficient to distribute heat generated from absorption of the optical power.

A method of coupling optical waveguides comprising the steps of: (i) providing at least one pair of waveguides located such that (a) light radiation propagating through one of the waveguides will be at least partially coupled to a corresponding waveguide and, (b) these waveguides are separated by a gap of about 2 &mgr;m to about 500 &mgr;m long; the waveguides having positive dn/dT; (ii) filling the gap with a photo-polymerizable composition, the composition having dn/dT of &minus;2&times;10 /C to &minus;4&times;10 /C; (iii) providing simultaneous photo-radiation through said waveguides, wherein the photo-radiation photo-polymerizes the composition, thereby (a) creating a first region bridging between the waveguides, the first region having a first index of refraction, and (b) a second region encapsulating the first region, the second region having a second index of refraction, such that said first index of refraction of the first region is at least 0.1% higher than the second index of refraction; and (iv) curing the remaining composition, while retaining an index difference of at least 0.1% between the first region and the second region.
