A method comprises providing a golden ROM unit comprising known good ROM code. The golden ROM is coupled to a ROM socket of a target system. The target system is booted, wherein booting comprises providing power to the target system and independently providing power to the ROM socket. The known good ROM code is loaded from the golden ROM to a system memory of the target system. Power is removed from the ROM socket and the golden ROM is decoupled from the ROM socket. A first subject ROM is coupled to the ROM socket. Power is provided to the ROM socket and the first subject ROM is programmed with the known good ROM code.

Flash ROM programming

A method, system, and computer-usable medium for implementing a programmable DMA master with data checking utilizing a drone system controller. According to an embodiment of the present invention, a drone processor generates a collection of random data and stores a first and second copy of the collection of random data in a first and second memory location in a drone memory. The drone processor writes a third copy of the collection of random data in a processor memory. When the drone processor retrieves the third copy from the processor memory, the drone processor writes the third copy in the second memory location in the drone memory. When the drone processor compares the first copy with the third copy, the results of the compare is written in a status location within the drone processor.

A method, apparatus and computer-usable medium are presented for dynamically selecting a clock signal used by a peripheral device that is coupled to a motherboard. When the motherboard is powered off, a clock selector sends the peripheral device an internal clock signal from the peripheral device's own internal clock controller. When the motherboard powers up, the clock selector sends the peripheral device an external clock signal from the motherboard.

The apparatus and method provide a CRC function that is used to calculate a CRC value for a portion of memory. The CRC value is compared with an expected CRC value to determine if the electrical component passed or failed the test.

A remote operator interface for a network computer is provided by a pocket-sized structural enclosure which remotely mounts input and output interface devices. The input and output devices providing a remote interface to control a network computer. The pocket-sized structural enclosure provides a means for electrically coupling the input and output interface devices to the network computer. The cable or data transmission medium which electronically couples the remote operator interface to the network computer provides a communication transmission medium for the network computer system. The pocket-sized structural enclosure can be mounted to a keyboard in close proximity to the operator of a network computer.

A computer network that includes a network server and a network client. The network server includes a storage medium configured with boot code data preferably comprising operating system software for the network client. The network client includes a power status indicator and is configured to query the power status indicator as part of a boot code sequence that is initiated in response to a boot event. The network client is configured to schedule retrieval of boot code data from the network server based upon the power status indicator. Preferably, the power status indicator includes a power fail circuit that indicates whether power to the network client has failed since a previous boot event. In one embodiment, the power fail circuit includes a flip flop arranged such that the output of the flip flop is preset when power is restored to the network client after a power failure. Preferably the clear input of the flip flop is programmably assertable. The power status indicator preferably further includes a power mode indicator that conveys information about the last known power mode of the network client. Preferably, the power mode indicator includes at least one nonvolatile memory bit.

Boot sequence for a network computer including prioritized scheduling of boot code retrieval

A computer chassis for covering and protecting the components of a data processing system. In a preferred embodiment, the computer chassis includes a chassis bezel. The chassis bezel has a slotted opening there through for allowing a user to access a user changeable component in the data processing system. The chassis bezel is configured to accept a cover plate that will cover the slotted opening thus preventing access to the user changeable component.

Method of providing an externally accessible flash memory card with security feature in a network computer

A computer tower has a variety of electronic components mounted within an enclosure. Power and communication-type cables extend from the enclosure for connection to a power source and peripheral components such as a monitor or operator interface. A pedestal is mounted to the lower end of the enclosure to increase the stability of the computer tower when it is placed on a level surface. The bottom of the pedestal has a recess or channel which extends all the way around the pedestal near its outer edge. The unused length of the cables may be coiled into the channel of the pedestal for temporary and aesthetically appealing storage.
