A hoof plate is provided which is applied to a hoofed animal having a hoof problem, such as laminitis which is characterized by a degeneration of the horny and sensitive laminae in the hoof that causes the coffin bone to drop and rotate, resulting in pain and debilitation of the animal. Other problems treated are split, cracked, shelly and splayed hoofs, and thin hoof walls. The plate is flexible metal plate having a plurality of spaced apertures. If the horse is to be treated shod, a shoe is applied and nails are driven through the hoof wall and the plate apertures and clinched against the plate. Screws are then applied to immovable secure the plate to the hoof. If unshod treatment is used, the plate is just screwed to the hoof. Outward hoof growth is restrained for a period of 8-16 weeks, during which oxygenated blood flow is stimulated to the circumflex artery in the hoof capsule, resulting in laminae regeneration, and growth in the hoof wall, frog, heels and sole. The effects coffin bone re-rotation (where dropped in laminitis) and enables the animal to walk more normally.

Method and apparatus for treating hoof problems

An appliance for assisting in the shoeing of horses and other animals is made of malleable galvanized sheet metal. It is formed of a pair of wings which extend outwardly from a center axis and extend upwardly from a line perpendicular to the axis at an angle of approximately 25&deg;-40&deg; to accommodate various hoof trim angles. The wings are wrapped about an animal's hoof and are trimmed, if necessary, to lie flush with the hoof edge. The wings each have a plurality of apertures for receiving the ends of shoeing nails that are clinched to the outer surface of the appliance. The appliance extends the life of a shoeing, prevents loose and thrown shoes and is useful in repairing cracked hooves.

Apparatus for detecting working fluid state in a heat transfer system of the type having an evaporator and an expansion valve for controlling mass flow of the working fluid to the evaporator, comprises a first sensor disposed in the working fluid on the outlet side of the evaporator; the first sensor producing a first signal related to the working fluid state; a second sensor disposed in the working fluid on the inlet side of the evaporator; the second sensor producing a second signal related to a pressure dependent characteristic of the working fluid; and a control circuit for receiving the first and second signals and determining the working fluid state based on a ratio of the first and second signals.

Apparatus and method for mass flow control of a working fluid

A fiber optic signal collection system and method for position sensing or sensing other parameters indicated by light distinctive patterns. The system is particularly suitable for use in aircraft flight control. The system includes a set of fiber optic fibers with first and second ends. The first ends are disposed adjacent a light distinctive pattern indicating a particular pattern such as a relative position. A portion of the second ends are positioned adjacent a light source and a portion of the second ends are disposed adjacent a light sensing electrical device such that light from the light source can be conveyed through the fibers, reflected from the light distinctive pattern, and conveyed through the fibers to the light sensing electrical device in order to detect the pattern in the electrical device. By this means the parameter indicated by the light distinctive pattern can be detected, and the right indication of which can be remotely conveyed through the fiber optic fibers to a conveniently located light sensing electrical device. Multiple parameters can be sensed with a single light sensing electrical device by alternate routing of light from different light distinctive patterns indicating different parameters to the light sensing electrical device.

Method and device for continuous pattern sensing using fiber optics

A heat transfer system includes a high side pressure sensor in the form of a temperature dependent resistance in heat exchange with the system working fluid to locally heat the fluid in response to a control signal. Control means are provided for applying the control signal to the resistance and detecting a minimum thermal resistance between the thermistor and the working fluid.

Apparatus and method for detecting characteristics of a working fluid

A fiber optic signal collection system and method for position sensing or sensing other parameters indicated by light distinctive patterns. The system is particularly suitable for use in aircraft flight control. The system includes a set of fiber optic fibers with first and second ends. The first ends are disposed adjacent a light distinctive pattern indicating a particular pattern such as a relative position. A portion of the second ends are positioned adjacent a light source and a portion of the second ends are disposed adjacent a light sensing electrical device such that light from the light source can be conveyed through the fibers, reflected from the light distinctive pattern, and conveyed through the fibers to the light sensing electrical device in order to detect the pattern in the electrical device. By this means the parameter indicated by the light distinctive pattern can be detected, and the light indication of which can be remotely conveyed through the fiber optic fibers to a conveniently located light sensing electrical device. A mass flow control apparatus and method for use in combination with a heat transfer system having a compressor, condenser, expansion valve, evaporator and working fluid in a fluid circuit. The mass flow is controlled using a quality sensor for the working fluid exiting the evaporator, and a high side pressure sensor. A control circuit is provided that monitors the quality sensor and the high side pressure sensor, and controls operation of the compressor, condenser fan and valve in response thereto. A flow reduction mode is used to reduce high side pressure at the valve inlet without excessive compressor cycling by changing the quality sensor set point when the high side pressure exceeds the condenser fan turn-on pressure but is less than the compressor disengage pressure.

An electro-hydraulic actuator having an electric motor disposed in a hydraulic fluid reservoir and connected to drive a hydraulic fluid pump. The actuator includes a piston rod which extends or retracts as a piston is hydraulically driven in a cylinder. An actuator housing forms the reservoir and cylinder and contains hydraulic passages connecting the pump, reservoir and cylinder. The actuator includes a one-way filter for filtering the hydraulic fluid. The hydraulic pump is preferably a rotating piston type and includes a port plate which allows the pump to drive the piston while the retract and extend chambers of the pump have different or unbalanced fluid drive ratios. A load limiting valve protects the system from excessive hydraulic pressure and a position sensor detects the position of the piston rod.
