A process to improve the performance of furfural for aromatics extraction from gas oils and lube distillates by the addition of ethers and/or aldehydes, preferably having a dielectric constant less than about 40 @ 25.degree. C.

At least one olefin and at least one isoparaffin are converted to a diesel fuel blending component by contacting the olefin and the isoparaffin with a catalyst selected from MCM-22, MCM-36, MCM-49, and MCM-56 to provide a product containing a diesel fuel.

Process for producing low aromatic diesel fuel with high cetane index

Ethylbenzene is produced by the alkylation of benzene with ethylene in the presence of an alkylation catalyst having a particular structure defined by its X-ray diffraction pattern. A preferred catalyst is the zeolite MCM-22. The process is typically carried out at a temperature of 300.degree. to 1000.degree. F. but the catalyst provides sufficient activity for the reaction to be carried out at temperatures below 700.degree. F. Liquid phase operation is preferred, giving a lower yield of polyethylated products. The use of the selected catalyst also results in a reduction of the xylene impurity level to values below 500 ppm in the product.

Production of ethylbenzene

A process for converting feedstock comprising hydrocarbon compounds to product comprising hydrocarbon compounds of lower molecular weight than said feedstock hydrocarbon compounds which comprises contacting said feedstock at conditions for said conversion with catalyst comprising crystals having a framework topology after heating at 110.degree. C. or higher giving an X-ray diffraction pattern with interplanar d-spacings at 16.4.+-.0.2 Angstroms, 8.2.+-.0.1 Angstroms, 6.21.+-.0.05 Angstroms, 6.17.+-.0.05 Angstroms, 5.48.+-.0.05 Angstroms and 4.74.+-.0.05 Angstroms, and without a significant interplanar d-spacing at 13.6-13.3 Angstroms.

Crystalline composition

A hydrocracking catalyst with improved distillate selectivity comprises, in addition to a metal component, a mesoporous crystalline material together with a molecular sieve component of relatively smaller pore size. The metal component of the catalyst is preferably associated with the high-surface area mesoporous component and high-metal loadings can be achieved in order to give good hydrogenation activity to the catalyst. The relatively smaller pore size component is preferably a large pore size zeolite such as zeolite Y or an intermediate pore size zeolite such as ZSM-5; this component provides a higher level of acidic functionality than the mesoporous component, achieving a functional separation in the hydrocracking process, permitting the metals loading and acidic activities to be optimized for good catalyst selectivity and activity. The catalysts enable the distillate selectivities comparable to amorphous catalyst to be achieved with improved conversion activity.

There is provided a method for preparing alpha-olefin oligomers of superior lubricating properties by contacting an alpha-olefin feed under oligomerization conditions with a catalyst comprising an activated layered silicate containing silica and oxide of Group VIB metal, e.g., Cr, between its layers. The catalyst can be activated by exposure to an oxidation gas at high temperature followed by treatment with a reducing agent, e.g., CO.

Oligomerization of alpha-olefins over layered silicate compositions

A moderate pressure hydrocracking process in which a highly aromatic, substantially dealkylated feedstock is processed to high octane gasoline and low sulfur distillate by hydrocracking over a catalyst, preferably comprising ultrastable Y and a Group VIII metal and a Group VI metal, in which the amount of the Group VIII metal content is incorporated at specified proportion into the framework aluminum content of the ultrastable Y component. The feedstock which is preferably a light cycle oil has an aromatic content of at least 50, usually at least 60 percent, and an API gravity not more than 25. The hydrocracking typically operates at 400-1000 psig at moderate to high conversion levels to maximize the production of monocyclic aromatics which provide the requisite octane value to the product gasoline. The distillate products from the hydrocracker are reduced in their sulfur content.

Catalyst for light cycle oil upgrading

The invention relates to sulfonic acid derivatives of crystalline porous materials having uniform pore size with an average pore size greater than 5 Angstroms or a Constraint Index of ten or less. In a preferred embodiment an acid treated crystalline porous material is reacted with a reagent to form the sulfonic acid derivative. The new products can be used as acid catalysts for acid catalyzed reactions. An example is the use of these materials in acid catalyzed etherification of methanol with isobutene.

Zeolites derivatized with sulfonic acids

There is provided a process for demetallizing hydrocarbon feedstocks, such as resids or shale oil. The process uses a catalyst comprising at least one hydrogenation metal, such as nickel and molybdenum, and an ultra-large pore oxide material. This ultra-large pore oxide material may have uniformly large pores, e.g., having a size of about 40 Angstroms in diameter.

Demetallation of hydrocarbon feedstocks with a synthetic mesoporous

There is provided a catalyst comprising a layered silicate, such as magadiite, containing interspathic polymeric silica which serves to prop open the layers. The catalyst further comprises rare earth cations which are exchanged with other cations in the silicate. It has been discovered that this rare earth cation exchange imparts enhanced hydrothermal stability to the catalyst. There is also provided a method for making this catalyst and a process for using this catalyst for cracking hydrocarbons. In the cracking process, the catalyst is regenerated.

A process for producing 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene by alkylation of an alkylaromatic, e.g. toluene, with a C.sub.5 olefin alkylating agent, e.g. 1-pentene, in the presence of a suitable alkylation catalyst, and dehydrocyclization of the resulting alkylate with a dehydrocyclization catalyst to generate a dimethylnaphthalene product rich in the 2,6-isomer. Additional process steps can include isomerization of the product and further alkylation.

There is provided a process for cracking hydrocarbon feedstocks which include large hydrocarbon molecules. Examples of such feedstocks are those which include a large proportion of resids. The catalyst used in this process comprises a layered silicate, such as magadiite, containing interspathic polymeric silica which serves to prop open the layers.

Catalytic cracking with layered silicates

There is provided a process for hydroisomerizing petroleum or synthetic paraffin wax with a particular catalyst. The catalyst comprises a hydrogenating component and a layered titanate containing an interspathic polymeric oxide such as silica. The hydrogenating component may be a Group VIII metal such as Pt.
