A light control material for displaying a color image. The light control material includes a material body including a plurality of microstructures. The microstructures are designed to produce an additive color perception of one or more colors and designed to reveal an image when the intensity of light reflected from a selected number of the microstructures is modulated. The selected microstructures can be modulated by one or more of modifying, obliterating, obscuring or covering up the selected microstructures. In one embodiment, the microstructures, prior to modulation of the selected number of microstructures, produce a uniform white additive color perception.

Light control material for displaying color, information, and images

An optical reflectance kit including a reading device and membrane test strip is disclosed for conducting a lateral flow assay. The reading device is portable. Assays may be conducted on bodily fluids to detect with high sensitivity the presence of certain hormones, glucose, or other bodily fluids of interest. Membrane test strips may receive a test fluid or test sample containing an analyte to be detected. The membrane test strips may be inserted directly into a receiving port of a reading device. Shielding stray light from the receiving port improves sensitivity and reduces the entry of stray or ambient light into the reading device. The reading device also includes one or more sensors capable of detecting the intensity of reflected electromagnetic radiation.

Reading device, method, and system for conducting lateral flow assays

A system that employs transmission-based detection techniques to determine the presence or concentration of an analyte within a test sample is provided. Specifically, the optical detection system contains a chromatographic-based assay device that is positioned in the electromagnetic radiation path defined between an illumination source and detector. To enhance the sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio of the system without significantly increasing costs, the distance between the illumination source and/or detector and the assay device is minimized. The illumination source and/or detector may also be positioned directly adjacent to the assay device. In addition, the system may be selectively controlled to reduce reliance on external optical components, such as optical filters or diffusers.

Optical detection system using electromagnetic radiation to detect presence or quantity of analyte

A membrane-based assay device for detecting the presence or quantity of an analyte residing in a test sample is provided. The device utilizes time-resolved fluorescence to detect the signals generated by excited fluorescent labels. Because the labels can have relatively long emission lifetime, short-lived background interference can be practically eliminated through delayed fluorescence detection. In addition, the resulting fluorescent reader can have a simple and inexpensive design. For instance, in one embodiment, the reader can utilize a silicon photodiode and a pulsed light-emitting diode (LED) to accurately excite labels and detect fluorescence on a membrane-based assay device without requiring the use of expensive components, such as monochromators or narrow emission band width optical filters.

Precisely formed taggant particles can be formed, in the range of 500&#x3bc; and smaller, from either inert polymers or biodegradable materials bearing information indicia, such as through specific shape, size, color, reflectivity, refractive index, surface geometry, imprinting, optical effect or properties, and electromagnetic properties, to uniquely tag, identify or authenticate articles.

Microstructured taggant particles, applications and methods of making the same

A light control material is provided for displaying color images having microstructures either on its surface or within the material which reflect a selected color and bandwidth of light in accordance with their physical characteristics. In an exemplary embodiment, the microstructures are stepped structures which reflect a particular color and bandwidth of light in accordance with the height of the steps of the stepped structures. In alternative embodiment, the microstructures are ribbed structures or crystal like structures designed to reflect a selected color and bandwidth of light. In addition, methods of fabricating the material are provided.

The present invention may be used with a variety of different diffraction-based diagnostic methods and systems. The analyzer enhances the accuracy and/or usefulness of these devices in detecting analytes, while providing more ease-of-use and convenience to the user. The analyzer may include a light source, a photodiode, a microprocessor and a display system for informing the user of the result. Other features include mirrors, lenses, a sample holder, and a mask for blocking out some light. The analyzer and related method and system may be used in a large number of environments, including commercial, professional, and individual.
