Composite material for use in a prosthetic device

A prosthetic device prepared by curing an intimate mixture of an addition-polymerizable composition and a particulate inorganic solid which provides up to 80% by volume of the prosthetic device. The prosthetic device has a flexural modulus similar to the boney tissue which it contacts in use.

Composite materials for orthopaedics

Compositions comprising an oligomer which (a) on average comprises at least one in-chain residue of the general formula ##STR1## wherein Ar.sup.1 is an aromatic group, R.sup.1 is hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl group, X is a group which activates Ar.sup.1 to electrophilic attack, and Y.sup.1 is an organic residue bearing a carboxyl substituent; and (b) has one or more pendant and/or terminal acyloxymethyl groups are described. They may be used in dental, electronic and electrical applications.

Aromatic oligomers

Compositions comprising an oligomer which (a) on average comprises at least one in-chain residue of the general formula ##STR1## wherein Ar.sup.1 is an aromatic group, R.sup.1 is hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl group, X is a group which activates Ar.sup.1 to electrophilic attack, and Y.sup.1 is an organic residue bearing a carboxyl substituent; ad (b) has one or more pendant and/or terminal acyloxymethyl groups are described. They may be used in dental, electronic and electrical applications.

A cross-linked polyamide which is preparable by the reaction of a polyimide with a polyamine wherein the functionality of one of the aforesaid reagents is at least two and the functionality of the other reagent is more than two. The cross-linked polyamides are useful as the matrix in high-performance, e.g. carbon fiber, composites.

Cross-linked polymer from aromatic dicarboxylic acid anhydride imide

Compositions comprising an oligomer which (a) comprises the repeating unit (AR - CHR), and where Ar is an aromatic group and R is hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl group of hydrogen, (b) has pendant and/or terminal groups which include inter alia acyloxymethyl, hydroxymethyl and carboxyl, and (c) has a functionality between 0.5 and 10, and processes for the preparation thereof are described. These compositions may be used in dental, electrical and electronic applications.

Aromatic oligomers and resins

Compositions comprising an oligomer which (a) comprises the repeating unit (Ar--CHR), and where Ar is an aromatic group and R is hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl group or hydrogen, (b) has pendant and/or terminal groups which include inter alia acyloxymethyl, hydroxymethyl and carboxyl, and (c) has a functionality between 0.5 and 10, and processes for the preparation thereof are described. These compositions may be used in dental, electrical and electronic applications.

Process for the preparation of aromatic oligomers

Compositions comprising an oligomer which (a) comprises the repeating unit (Ar - CHR), and where Ar is an aromatic group and R is hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl group or hydrogen, (b) has pendant and/or terminal groups which include inter alia acyloxymethyl, hydroxymethyl and carboxyl, and (c) has a functionality between 0.5 and 10, and processes for the preparation thereof are described. These compositions may be used in dental, electrical and electronic applications.

A polyaryl sulphone made from a reagent of the formulae H--Ar--SO.sub.2.X and/or an equimolar mixture of reagents of the formulae X.SO.sub.2 --Ar--SO.sub.2.X and H--Ar--H, where X is a halogen atom and Ar is a bivalent aromatic radical, tends to suffer from an increase in the viscosity of the melt due to decomposition of terminal sulphonyl halide groups. A polymeric material containing no sulphonyl halide groups is obtained therefrom by reacting the polymer in solution with an organic compound such as aniline or diphenyl ether which will react with sulphonyl halide groups in the polymer to produce groups which are stable at temperatures at which the polymer is molten.

Manufacture of polysulphones

Random or block copolymers having repeating units of the structures ##STR1## are crystallizable, in contrast to the regular alternating copolymer ##STR2## WHICH IS AMORPHOUS, AND THEY ARE USEFUL AS THERMOPLASTIC, FILM- AND FIBER-FORMING MATERIALS. They may be made by copolymerizing 4-phenoxyphenylsulphonyl and 4-phenoxybenzoyl chlorides in the presence of ferric chloride, or by copolymerizing alkali metal salts of 4-(4-chlorophenylsulphonyl) phenol and 4-(4-chlorobenzoyl) phenol.

Manufacture of crystallizable polymeric phenylene ether sulphone ketones

A prosthetic device having at least part of the surface thereof made of a material having a surface energy, as hereinbefore defined, in the range 50 erg cm.sup.-2 to 100 erg cm.sup.-2, for example, made of a plastics material which is a copolymer comprising repeat units having the structure --CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --O-- and other units capable of stabilizing the copolymer in water, the copolymer comprising at least 10% by weight of units having the structure --CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --O-- and no more than 95% by weight of said units.

1. A film-forming polymeric material selected from the group consisting of (i) polymers consisting essentially of repeating units having the structure --Ar--SO.sub.2 -- and (ii) polymers consisting essentially of units having the structure --Ar--SO.sub.2 -- and units having the structure --Ar--CO--, where Ar is selected from (a) a divalent aromatic radical obtained by removal of two aromatically bound hydrogen atoms from a compound selected from the group consisting of benzene, polynuclear hydrocarbons containing not more than two aromatic rings, diphenyl, compounds having the structure ##STR1## where Z is selected from the group consisting of --O-- and --S-- and where said compound contains two aromatic rings, one of said hydrogen atoms being removed from each ring, and (b) substituted derivatives of said divalent aromatic radicals in which at least one of the aromatically bound hydrogen atoms is substituted by a monovalent radical selected from the group consisting of halogen atoms, alkyl groups containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and alkoxy groups containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, at least some of the Ar units being a radical derived from said compounds of the structure ##STR2## or said substituted derivatives thereof.
