A system and method for monitoring liveliness includes a management device which has an application layer where applications are executed. A connection monitor is located other than on the application layer, and the connection monitor is configured to receive requests from clients and deliver the requests to components on the application layer. The components include a generic application monitor which responds to liveliness monitor requests from the clients for all applications monitored, and one or more applications which response to requests to that application.

Embodiments of the present invention address deficiencies of the art in respect to e2e SLA support in a network of both manageable and unmanageable portions and provide a method, system and computer program product for e2e SLA compliance across both managed and unmanaged network segments. The method can include identifying both a managed segment and an unmanaged segment of an e2e network for a communications path implicated by an SLA, determining an observed delay for the unmanaged segment of the e2e network, computing from a desired delay for the communications path and the observed delay a differential delay, and constraining the managed segment to meet the differential delay in order to assure meeting the desired delay for the communications path implicated by the SLA.

An apparatus and method for distributing traffic across a group of machines using application instance statistics. In order to perform load balancing in accordance with the present invention, a method of generating weights to bias load balancing distributions is provided. The application instances to which traffic is being distributed, or the application middleware, are instrumented to establish certain metrics about the application while running. The application instance instrumentation will provide application statistics such as number of successful transactions, application response times, application topology, importance of transactions being processed, time the application is blocked waiting for resources, resource consumption data, and the like. These metrics are collected, processed, and then presented as a set of weights to the load balancing apparatus to govern its distribution of traffic. With such application metrics available, traffic can be disbursed based on the current state of the application instances and other application instances in the transaction's path, the application instance's likelihood to complete the request, or even higher level business-oriented goals.

In particular, the solution can generate a set of tentative recovery segments for the computer infrastructure based on a related resource graph and a set of partition rules. The set of tentative recovery segments can be used to manage the computer infrastructure and/or a set of recovery segments, which includes recovery characteristic(s) for each segment can be generated based on the set of tentative recovery segments and a set of recovery segment templates. In any event, the invention provides a solution that fully and/or partially automates the identification of recovery segments within a computer infrastructure, thereby enabling a more effective management of the computer infrastructure.

An apparatus for providing direct data processing access in a network computing system environment. The system environment has a main storage which can be connected to one or more application servers and is in processing communication with an interface element. The interface element has at least one adapter and can be connected to one or more application user(s). One or more queues are established in the main storage that can handle data without causing interrupts in the running programs. Incoming data is received using the adapter and as data is received or modified, the status of the network computing system will be updated to reflect the new data or change. Data is then processed in the main storage after interrogating the multiple existing queues in the main storage simultaneously and forwarding them in turn to their appropriate destination or application server after a determination has been made by interrogating these queues.

A list of dynamic VIPAs is distributed among the protocol stacks and a hierarchy of backup communication protocol stacks for the dynamic VIPAs is determined based on the list of dynamic VIPAs. Upon receiving notification of failure of the first stack the second stack evaluates the hierarchy of backup stacks to determine if it is the next stack in the hierarchy for the VIPA associated with the first application instance. If so, then the VIPA associated with the first application instance is transferred to the second communication protocol stack associated with the second application instance.
