Thermoplastic starch materials and methods of making the same are provided. The methods involve mixing a starch material, plasticizer and water in a low-shear mixer under conditions that will result in substantial gelatinization of the starch material. The melt formed within the mixer is discharged into an extruder for final processing. The methods prevent degradation of the starch material thereby resulting in the formation of a thermoplastic starch material having high strength, due at least in part to the preservation of the molecular weight characteristics of the starch, and improved elasticity due the ability to use higher water contents than conventional processes.

Thermoplastic starch and method for preparing the same

Processes for the production of polyols from sources such as dried distillers grains plus solubles (DDGS) make use of a two-stage reaction scheme. In the first stage, the proteinaceous starting material is reacted with an aminating agent, such as diethanolamine (DEOA), to generate amino-amides and amides. These products are then reacted with an alkoxylating agent, preferably a substituted or unsubstituted epoxide to yield polyols. These polyols may be further reacted with isocyanates to give low-cost rigid polyurethane foams. In alternate forms, lignin may be directly converted to polyols by reaction with an alkoxylating agent, optionally followed by reaction with an isocyanate to produce polyurethanes.

Production of polyols using distillers grains and proteins and lignin extracted from distillers grains

Interacted starch products made up of resistant starch and hydrocolloid are provided which exhibit at least about 20% resistance to &#x3b1;-amylase digestion. The products are prepared by mixing together quantities of resistant starch and hydrocolloid in water with mixing and optional heating, followed by drying. Foods containing the interacted starch products are also disclosed.

Composite materials containing non-plasticized, non-gelatinized starch, a compatibilizer and a synthetic resin, such as polyethylene and/or polypropylene, may be used to make wood replacement products for use as construction materials.

An extrusion-based injection molding system is designed for use in food processing applications. Interior surfaces, such as the barrel exit line and/or fill line, of the system may be coated with a friction-reducing agent.

Injection apparatus for producing molded food products

A tubular fishing rod holder capable of being used from a bank of a body of water or from a boat. The fishing rod holder having a rearward end, a mounting portion and a holding portion, wherein the holding portion is adapted to accommodate the handle portion of, for example, spinning, spin casting or bait casting fishing rods. The mounting portion comprises a top receiving hole, a bottom receiving hole and a side cut out portion connecting the top and bottom receiving holes, wherein the top receiving hole is positioned further away from the rearward end than the bottom receiving hole such that the side cut out portion is preferably formed at a 45.degree. angle. The mounting portion allows the fishing rod holder to be removably mounted to a support in a cantilevered arrangement so that the fishing rod holder will position a fishing rod with easy reach of a fisherman.
