Inflation pressure garments and connectors

An apparatus for promoting vascular circulation, including a garment configured to at least partially surround an anatomical structure of a patient. A compression element is coupled to the garment and configured to compress at least a portion of the anatomical structure when the compression element is actuated. A controller is configured to selectively actuate the compression element over a plurality of cycles. Each cycle has an actuated time during which the compression element is arranged to exert a first pressure and an unactuated time during which the compression element is arranged to exert a second pressure different than the first pressure, and the controller is configured to use a random value in determining the deflated time of one or more of the cycles.

Compression therapy system and method

Inflatable mattress apparatus includes a mattress provided with a plurality of inflatable cells (A, B); a manifold unit (V-V) connected to the plurality of cells, wherein the manifold (V-V) couples the cells into a plurality of individual sets of cells; and a control unit connected to the manifold, the control unit being operable to provide substantially simultaneous inflation and deflation of cells (A, B) in each set of cells over a period, and time offset inflation and deflation of cells in different sets of cells. The apparatus can provide the same benefits of a 1 of 2' system with reduced movement of the entire surface at any point in the cycle, less air moving at any given time and thus a reduction in the audible noise produced in any pump supplying the air and the associated airflow in the mattress. The arrangement provide other benefits too.

An electrosurgical system includes a first unit including a generator, and a second unit including an electrode assembly, the second unit being detachably connectible to the first unit such that radio frequency power can be conveyed to the electrode assembly, wherein the second unit firstly includes a passive electrical identification component having a parameter of a finite non-zero value indicative of a characteristic of the electrode assembly, and the second unit additionally includes an output circuit adapted to generate an identifiable characteristic signal, the first unit firstly including a sensing circuit for determining the value of the electrical identification component so as to identify the second unit when the second unit is connected to the first unit, and the first unit additionally including means for receiving the identifiable characteristic signal from the output circuit when the second unit is connected to the first unit.

Electrosurgical system and an electrode assembly for an electrosurgical system

An electrosurgical system is provided for the treatment of tissue, the system comprising an electrosurgical generator () and an instrument () comprising an instrument shaft () having a longitudinal axis, and an electrode assembly () at one end of the shaft. The electrode assembly () comprises a first tissue treatment electrode (), a second tissue treatment electrode (), and first and second return electrodes () electrically insulated from the first and second tissue treatment electrodes by means of insulation members (). The first and second tissue treatment electrodes () each have an exposed surface for treating tissue, the exposed surface of the first tissue treatment electrode () being such as to treat tissue disposed on the longitudinal axis, and the exposed surface of the second tissue treatment electrode () being such as to treat tissue disposed laterally of the longitudinal axis. The instrument has a first set of connections (A,C) by which the first tissue treatment electrode () can be placed in circuit with the first return electrode () such that, in use, a current path is established between the first tissue treatment electrode () and the first return electrode (). The instrument has a second set of connections (B,D) by which the second tissue treatment electrode () can be placed in circuit with the second return electrode () such that, in use, a current path is established between the second tissue treatment electrode () and the second return electrode ().

An electrosurgical instrument is provided for the treatment of tissue, the instrument comprising an instrument shaft () having a longitudinal axis, and an electrode assembly at one end of the shaft. The electrode assembly comprises first and second active electrodes (), () and at least one return electrode (), the electrodes being electrically insulated one from another by means of one or more insulation members (). The first and second active electrodes () each have an exposed surface for treating tissue, the exposed surface () of the first active electrode being such as to treat tissue disposed laterally of the longitudinal axis at a first radial position with respect to the instrument shaft. The exposed surface () of the second active electrode is such as to treat tissue disposed laterally of the longitudinal axis at a second radial position with respect to the instrument shaft. The instrument has a first set of connections by which the first active electrode () can be placed in circuit with the return electrode (), and a second set of connections by which the second active electrode () can be placed in circuit with the return electrode ().

Electrosurgical instrument

An electrosurgical system includes an electrosurgical generator () including at least one source of radio frequency (RF) power, and a plurality of output connections (), only one of the output connections at any one time being active in that it is able to receive radio frequency power from the source. The generator () includes selection means adapted to change the active output connection, and a controller adapted to control the supply of radio frequency power from the source to the active output connection. The system also includes a plurality of electrosurgical assemblies, each including an electrosurgical instrument () and a cable () connecting the electrosurgical instrument to one of the output connections (). The electrosurgical instruments () each include a handswitch () adapted to send a signal to the generator () to change the active output connection. The selection means is such that a signal sent from the handswitch () of the active instrument () can cause the generator () to change the active output connection to a different output connection (), but a signal sent from the handswitch of an instrument other than the active instrument does not immediately cause the selection means to change the active output connection to a different output connection.

An electrosurgical generator includes one or more radio frequency (RF) power sources and an output stage including at least two output lines for connection to an electrosurgical instrument. The generator includes means for measuring a parameter associated with the electrosurgical procedure, such as the impedance measured across two of the output lines. A controller controls the generator such that it delivers a first RF waveform (such as a cutting signal) or a second RF waveform (such as a coagulating signal) to the output lines, and, in a combined mode, both first and second waveforms. The controller automatically adjusts at least one aspect of one or both waveforms in the combined mode, in response to the measured parameter associated with the surgical procedure.

Electrosurgical generator

An electrosurgical system includes an electrosurgical generator including at least one source of radio frequency (RF) power, and a plurality of output connections, only one of the output connections at any one time being active in that it is able to receive radio frequency power from the source. The generator includes selection means adapted to change the active output connection, and a controller adapted to control the supply of radio frequency power from the source to the active output connection. The system also includes a plurality of electrosurgical assemblies, each including an electrosurgical instrument and a cable connecting the electrosurgical instrument to one of the output connections. The electrosurgical assemblies each include a handswitch adapted to send a signal to the selection means to change the active output connection. The selection means is such that a signal sent from the handswitch of the active instrument can cause the selection means to change the active output connection to a different output connection, but a signal sent from the handswitch of an instrument other than the active instrument does not immediately cause the selection means to change the active output connection to a different output connection.

An electrosurgical system includes a generator for generating radio frequency power, and an electrosurgical instrument including at least three electrodes and. The generator includes a radio frequency output stage having at least a pair of RF output lines, and a power supply coupled to the output stage for supplying power to the output stage. A controller is operable to limit the radio frequency output voltage developed across the output lines to at least a first predetermined threshold value to produce a cutting RF waveform, and a second threshold value to produce a coagulating RF waveform. In a combined mode, the controller delivers both cutting and coagulating waveforms, either simultaneously or by alternating constantly between the first and second threshold values to form a blended signal. The system also includes means for feeding the waveform to the three or more electrodes such that the cutting RF waveform is delivered between a first pair of the electrodes, and the coagulating waveform is delivered between a second pair of the electrodes.

Electrosurgical generator and system

A pneumatic system consists of an inflatable/deflatable article, for example, a compression garment connected to a pump by connectors, respectively. The connector attached to the garment carries an RFID transponder and a corresponding radio circuit is located within the pump. In use, the transponder transmits and receives information to and from the pump radio circuit. The information exchanged is used by the pump control system to activate the pump and to operate the pump to provide the particular operating parameters for that garment, for example, pressure, inflation/deflation cycle duration of treatment, etc. The pneumatic system may include communication means for the pump, such as a radio circuit, that is located remote from the pump. Also, the pneumatic system may include a support mechanism that functions both as a handle and a hook.

Identification and communication system for inflatable devices

In an electrosurgical generator for generating radio frequency power, the generator includes a radio frequency output stage having two or more output connections, and a power supply coupled to the output stage for supplying power to the output stage. A controller is operable to cause the generator to supply a blended output signal alternating constantly between a first output signal across the output connections in which the radio frequency output voltage developed across the output connections is limited to at least a first predetermined threshold value for cutting or vaporisation of tissue, and a second output signal across the output connections in which the radio frequency output voltage developed across the output connections is limited to a second threshold value for coagulation. There is also provided adjustment means, operable by a user of the electrosurgical generator, for changing between various preset settings for the blended signal, the preset settings each having a predetermined duty cycle of the blended signal that is limited to the first threshold value for cutting or vaporisation, and a predetermined duty cycle of the blended signal that is limited to the second threshold value for coagulation.

A fluid flow control system for an electromagnetic pump having an electromagnetic drive () and a compressor (). The control system established a required current in the compressor coils () to control the position and movement of the actuator (), the actuator deflecting a diaphragm within the pump to provide the required flow. The control system includes a command signal generator () to create a signal representing the required flow. The signal is applied to a command processor () with any feedback signals () for example, coil current and/or actuator displacement. The command processor () calculates the appropriate drive signal defined by mark-space ratio, repetition rate, and amplitude. The drive signal controls the voltage supplied to the compressor coils () resulting in a required coil current to provide the desired flow. A dc power supply is used to avoid problems regarding main power supply and frequency.
