A method, system, and computer program product for determining relative quality of search engine indexes and search results include performing a two-level random walk through a hypertext-linked document set. Search engine index quality is measured based on the number of encountered documents that are indexed by the search engine index. Search result quality is measured based on the number and quality of documents that link to the result document.

Ranking search engine results

A system generates a list of near-uniform samples of data sets (e.g., web pages) from among a plurality of host computers. The system performs a random walk so as to generate a set of visited addresses. For each address in the set, a reachability measure is computed. Then, samples are selected from the set, such that the probability of selecting a given address is inversely proportional to the reachability measure for the address. The selected samples form the list of near-uniform samples.

System and method for near-uniform sampling of web page addresses

Output symbols are generated using input symbols and basis elements. A plurality of basis elements are generated. Each basis element is generated from a predetermined function of associated input symbols associated with the basis element. A space-efficient, multi-cycle barrel shifter circuit for shifting data inputted into the circuit by a shift value over multiple clock cycles which circuit includes: (a) a load module adapted to receive a load signal and the data, the load module coupled to the shift module and configured to load the data into the shift module upon receipt of a load signal; (b) a register module coupled to the shift module and to the load module, where the register module is a register adapted to receive a clock signal and configured to pass the data through the shift module with each clock cycle; (c) a constant shift module coupled to the register module and the shift module and configured to shift the data by a constant amount with each clock cycle; and (d) a control module coupled to the shift module and the load module, the control module capable of generating a command signal for each elementary shifter in the shift module for each clock cycle based upon the shift value, the command signal determining the amount of shift applied to the data by the shift module during each clock cycle so that the total amount of shift applied to the data after multiple clock cycles equals the shift value.

A method determines a random permutation of input lines that produced a permuted set of bits in a bitstream. In a source design, the method replaces a logic element whose input lines are permutable with a test function. The source design is processed by a design tool to generate the bitstream including the permuted set of bits. The test function is probed with test values, and the probe results are compared with the permuted set of bits to discover the permutation of the set of bits. The test values can include a message.

An image stored in a memory of a computer as pixels, each pixel including a bit pattern to indicate a grey-scale level. The image is compressed by grouping the pixels of the image into a plurality of regularized groups of pixels. The partitioning of the image can be in groups of four by four adjacent pixels. Groups of pixels having identical bit patterns are identified. The groups of pixels are encoded according to a frequency of groups of pixels having identical bit patterns.

A method of encoding a message including a plurality of data items, includes identifying maximum and minimum numbers of first edges to be associated with data items. A first distribution of different numbers of first edges, ranging from the maximum to the minimum number of first edges, to be associated with the data items is computed. A first associated number of first edges, within the range, is established for each data item, the different numbers of first edges being associated with the data items according to the computed first distribution. A maximum and minimum number of second edges to be associated with redundant data items are identified. A second distribution of numbers of second edges, ranging from the maximum to the minimum number of second edges, to be associated with the redundant data items is computed. An associated number of second edges, within the range, is established for each redundant data item, the different numbers of second edges being associated with the redundant data items according to the determined second distribution. A threshold number of potentially lost/corrupted data items is established. An encoded message is formed with the redundant data items associated with the data items according to the first distribution and with the data items associated with the redundant data items according to the second distribution only if the number of data items which are recoverable or correctable exceeds the threshold.

Irregularly graphed encoding technique

An encoded message includes a plurality of data items and a plurality of redundant data items. Each of the redundant data items is associated with more than one of the data items. To decode the encoded message, a reduced first redundant data item is reduced to correspond to only one data item. This data item is replaced with the reduced first redundant data item. A second redundant data item is reduced, using the replaced data item, to correspond to only a second of data item. The second data item is replaced with the second redundant data item to decode the encoded message.

Loss resilient decoding technique

A method of operating a multiprocessor system having a predefined number of processing units for processing data, includes obtaining load information representing a loading of each of a number of randomly selected ones of the processing units. The number of randomly selected processing units is greater than 1 and substantially less than the predefined number of processing units. A least loaded of the randomly selected processing units is identified from the obtained load information. The data is directed to the identified least loaded randomly selected processing unit for processing.

Task processing optimization in a multiprocessor system

In a distributed network, client computers are connected to server computers. The server computers store a plurality of Web pages. The Web pages are partitioned into sets, where each set includes Web pages that are substantially similar in content. A preset compression dictionary is generated for each set of Web pages. In addition, a fingerprint is generated for each preset dictionary. The fingerprints uniquely identify each of the preset dictionaries. When one of the client computers requests one of the Web pages, a compressed form of the Web page is sent along with the fingerprint of the dictionary that was used to compress the Web page. The client computer can then request the preset dictionary in order to decompress the Web page when the client does not have a copy of the preset dictionary.
