A gear assembly is provided that simplifies the integration of a differential assembly into the hollow rotor of an electric motor. The gear assembly utilizes a hollow cross member that includes a central portion and a plurality of hollow extension members onto which the gears are mounted. Within each of the hollow extension members is a pin. When the pins are withdrawn, the assembly fits unimpeded within the hollow rotor. When the pins are partially extended out of the corresponding extension members, the ends of the pins fit within apertures in the rotor. A plug fits within a centrally located thru-hole in the central portion of the hollow cross member, thereby locking the pins in the extended position and locking the gear assembly in place.

To simplify fabrication of an integral hub piece, the opening between the upper and lower female cones in this hub has sufficient width or radial dimension to allow access to both cones from one side of the hub with the cutting tool. A cutting tool is used which has a width smaller than the opening between the cones. Preferably, the tool has a width which is about equal to or smaller than an angular dimension through this opening which is defined by extending surfaces of the upper and lower female cones. If this limitation is satisfied, both cones can be created with a single machine set up operating from one side of the integrated hub.

Methods of machining a single piece hub with integral upper and lower female cones includes providing a single piece hub with upper and lower conical voids having respective narrow ends proximal each other and respective wide ends distal each other. Surfaces of the voids are machined using a tool provided from a single side of the hub that is dimensioned to fit through an opening defined by the interface between the narrow ends of the conical void. The tool can be moved parallel to a rotational axis for accessing conical surfaces of both voids and perpendicular to the rotational axis while contacting the surfaces so as to produce a final machined surface.

Method of forming a hub for use in a disk drive motor

An active fluid bearing system is provided. In one example, the active fluid bearing system includes an interface region formed between an outer surface of an inner member and an opposing inner surface of an outer member. The inner and outer members are disposed for relative rotation of the inner and outer members, and thereby form an interface region having a hydrodynamic bearing region and an active bearing region. A liquid is disposed in the interface region at the hydrodynamic bearing region, and is further disposed in the active bearing region if the inner and outer members are not relatively rotating. The bearing system is operable for evacuating at least a portion of the liquid from the active bearing region during relative rotation of the inner and outer members. The active bearing region may be a journal bearing or a thrust bearing.

A fluid bearing design is provided which according to one aspect includes a shaft defining together with a surrounding sleeve an asymmetric journal bearing, and a thrust bearing at or near an end of the shaft towards which the asymmetric journal bearing is pumping, with that end of the shaft being closed off. The journal bearing asymmetry establishes a hydraulic pressure toward the closed end of the shaft. This pressure provides an axial thrust to set the bearing gap for the conical bearing. The conical bearing itself is a relatively balanced bearing, although it may have a bias pumping toward the shaft and the journal bearing. A pressure closed equalization path from the journal bearing through the conical bearing to the end of the shaft may be established to maintain a constant hydraulic force across the conical bearing, and which may also prevent any asymmetry in the conical bearing from affecting the net thrust force acting upon the end of the shaft where the conical bearing is located. Alternatively, in a fluid dynamic bearing design comprising a shaft and a thrust plate at or near an end of the shaft, asymmetry is again established along the journal bearing to establish a pressure gradient directed toward the thrust bearing.

A disc drive design comprising a shaft and sleeve supported for relative rotation by a journal type fluid dynamic bearing utilizing grooves on one of the shaft or sleeve surfaces. At least a part of the shaft is generally conical in cross-section, so that a downward force component is developed to balance upward pressure on end of shaft; this conical region typically includes a fluid dynamic bearing (grooves being on either the shaft or sleeve). A grooved pattern of a design similar to that usually found on a thrust plate may be defined on an axial end surface of the shaft or the counterplate facing the axial end of the shaft, so that thrust is created to maintain separation of the end of the shaft and the facing counterplate plate during relative rotation. A diamond-like coating (DLC) may be applied to the counterplate surface or to the end of the shaft; further, either the counterplate or shaft may be made out of ceramic material to enhance this performance. This coating may also be applied to the conical surface of the shaft or the facing surface of the sleeve.

A conical hydrodynamic bearing gauging and seating system that enables the efficient seating of conical hydrodynamic bearings to a rotor shaft and hub while the rotor assembly remains in a pressing fixture. The invention provides a conical hydrodynamic bearing gauging and seating apparatus comprising a capacitive probe assembly disposed within a hollow pressing fixture in communication with a rotor shaft.

A method and apparatus for assembling a hydrodynamic bearing in a motor is provided. The method comprises affixing a first bearing upon a shaft, applying an axial tension force to the shaft, and affixing a second bearing upon the shaft in a spaced apart relation to the first bearing, as the axial force is applied to the shaft.

A bearing system in which an axially stiff narrow gap fluid dynamic gas bearing. As an example two fluid dynamic bearings are provided spaced apart along a shaft, one of the bearings comprising a fluid dynamic bearing, the other comprising an air bearing. The fluid dynamic bearing has a larger gap, while the air bearing has a relatively small gap. The overall working surface area of the air bearing may be twice as much or more than the working surface area of the fluid bearing.

The overall working surface area of the air bearing may be twice as much or more than the working surface area of the fluid bearing.

A disc drive system includes a disc drive chassis, a magnetic storage disc, a read/write transducer adjacent to the disc for reading and writing information on the disc, and a hydrodynamic bearing assembly. The hydrodynamic bearing assembly rotatably couples the magnetic storage disc to the disc drive chassis. The hydrodynamic bearing assembly includes a fluid path therethrough for circulating a fluid. A labyrinth seal and magnet shield is provided proximate the hydrodynamic bearing assembly.

A fluid dynamic bearing usable in a spindle motor where the bearing is defined between two relative rotating surfaces which are open to the air at both ends, allowing the use of a fixed shaft. At one end of the shaft, at least one high volume, low stiffness seal is used, in combination with a low volume, high stiffness seal. The pressure differential between these two seals is balanced by one or more high stiffness, low volume seals spaced axially away along the shaft.
