A servicing daemon is described herein for providing servicing of a running computer system (such as a filer). The servicing daemon resides and executes on the operating system of the filer and communicates across a network with a debugger that resides and executes on a remote administering computer. A debugging session is performed that complies with a protocol relating to the remote accessing of files. The debugging session provides live servicing of an application executing on the filer without requiring an actual corefile (having copied filer memory data) to be created. Rather, the servicing daemon creates a simulated corefile header that is sent to the debugger, receives requests from the debugger, and maps addresses specified in the requests to filer memory addresses. The servicing daemon then reads and retrieves data directly from filer memory at the determined filer memory addresses and sends the data to the debugger for analysis.

Servicing daemon for live debugging of storage systems

The present invention is directed to non-disruptive generation of core files for a computer appliance without rebooting the computer appliance. In an embodiment of the invention, the computer appliance is analyzed. A determination is made as to what core file generation options will be non-disruptive to the computer appliance. The tradeoff is evaluated between options that will generate core files which are more useful in diagnosing potential problems with the computer appliance and options which will generate core files which are less disruptive. A procedure is determined which will generate the core file without disrupting the computer appliance. Resources are allocated to utilize in generation of the core file. The procedure is then executed and a core file is generated without disrupting the computer appliance.

Non-disruptive generation of core files without reboot

The present invention is directed to an automatic generation of a support collateral as well as to an automatic generation of core files. In one embodiment, a support collateral is automatically generated when a core file is generated. The support collateral is information used to support diagnosis of potential problems. A computer appliance further includes a framework of rules organized by a subsystem. A subsystem is a functional component of the computer appliance. Rules are evaluated when an inflection point is encountered. An inflection point is a critical point in processing where processing is interrupted. A core file is generated for the computer appliance when indicated to do so by a rule.

Automatic generation of core files and automatic generation of support information with generation of core files

A plurality of object oriented parts are automatically interconnected on a computer system. A user selects at least two of the parts for interconnection. Default actions and events are automatically selected for each object, and the connection therebetween is made.

Method and system for dynamic connections with intelligent default events and actions in an application development environment

A software class including known system events is imported into the palette of a development tool. After selecting a class for import, all variables and methods in the class meeting predetermined criteria are discovered. The variables are marked as properties, the methods as actions and the system events as events. A capture method is generated to capture the events and forward them to the development tool. Then, an invoke method is generated to execute each of the actions, a set method is generated to set a value for each of the properties, and a get method is generated to retrieve each value. Finally, a new subclass comprising the capture method, the invoke method, the set method and the get method is generated and added to the palette.
