Systems and methods relate to applying a coating to a substrate. Coatings can be generated using layer-by-layer application techniques. Typically, application of a first aqueous solution is alternated with application of a second aqueous solution. Example first aqueous solutions include polyethyleneimine (PEI) and hydroxy-terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS-OH). Example second aqueous solutions include silicate and PDMS-OH. In some instances, first aqueous solutions and/or second aqueous solutions additionally include methyl-terminated PDMS (PDMS-CH).

Substrate coatings: systems, methods, and techniques

One example provides a circuit structure comprising a liquid metal conductive path enclosed in an encapsulant, a polymer circuit support comprising a polymer having a functional species available for a condensation reaction, and a cross-linking agent covalently bonding the encapsulant to the polymer circuit support via the functional species.

Connecting a flexible circuit to other structures

Described herein are systems and methods for coupling environmental hazard detection and actuation of a wearable chemical sensor at a molecular level. The chemical sensor may be a wearable chemical sensor implemented as a powder, cream, lacquer or other wearable construct. The wearable chemical sensor may detect exposure to various environmental hazards and provide an analog means (e.g., a range of color changes) of indicating the level of environmental hazard exposure.

Chemical sensors for detection and display of environmental hazards

An electrochemical energy-storage cell comprises a flexible positive electrode and a flexible negative electrode including a gallium-based liquid metal dispersed on a flexible wire mesh. Flexible thermoelectric generators and methods of manufacturing are disclosed. In one embodiment, a flexible thermoelectric generator includes a plurality of pillars, a first and a second plurality of flexible interconnects, and a flexible material. The plurality of pillars having a first side and a second side. The first plurality of flexible interconnects electrically connecting pairs of the plurality of pillars on the first side. The second plurality of flexible interconnects electrically connecting the pairs of plurality of pillars on the second side. The first and the second plurality of flexible interconnects alternate among the pairs of plurality of pillars to form an electrical circuit having a first end and a second end. The flexible material covering the first and second plurality of flexible interconnects and having an external surface. The flexible material is configured to conduct thermal energy from the external surface to the plurality of pillars.

Flexible thermoelectric generator and methods of manufacturing

Examples are disclosed that relate to flexible electrical interconnects in electronic devices. One example provides a device including a flexible substrate, a conductive trace disposed on the flexible substrate, an electronic component mounted to the flexible substrate, a liquid metal interconnect bridging between a pad on the component and the trace on the flexible substrate, and an encapsulant covering the interconnect.

Flexible conductive bonding

Examples are provided for a flexible circuit element including a flexible insulating support structure, a solid metal trace extending at least partially between a first connector and a second connector on the flexible insulating support structure, and a liquid metal conductor disposed in contact with the solid metal trace in a region of the trace configured to repeatedly flex when installed in a device.

Flexible interconnect

One example provides a flexible electrical interconnect comprising a substrate, a liquid conductive pathway supported by the substrate, and a conductively anisotropic, magnetic particle-embedded encapsulant that interfaces with the liquid conductive pathway for connecting to another circuit element.

A method of manufacturing a fluidic structure is disclosed. A cavity that defines a shape of an element of the fluidic structure within a material is formed. The cavity is filled with liquid metal. The cavity is sealed. The fluidic structure behaves as an antenna. A fluidic antenna includes a material that defines a shape of the fluidic antenna by a cavity filled with liquid metal formed within the material, where the material further defines at least one mechanical property of the fluidic antenna.
