A burner including a first burner element having a first annular oxidant nozzle surrounding a first inner fuel nozzle; a second burner element having a second annular oxidant nozzle surrounding a second inner fuel nozzle, the second burner element being positioned adjacent to and spaced apart from the first burner element; a staging nozzle configured to flow secondary oxidant and being positioned adjacent to and spaced apart from the second burner element and separated from the first burner element by the second burner element; wherein the first inner nozzle and the second inner nozzle each have a major axis defined by a length L and a minor axis defined by a height h; wherein 5<=L/h<=15; wherein the staging nozzle has a major axis; and wherein the major axes of the first and second inner nozzles and the staging nozzle are substantially parallel with each other.

Burner and method for transient heating

A tuyere comprising an inner tube including a lower section having a first diameter, an upper section having a second diameter smaller than the first diameter, and a converging transition section having a converging angle &#x398; from 30&#xb0; to 60&#xb0; connecting the lower section to the upper section, the inner tube terminating in an inner nozzle at a downstream end of the upper section; and an outer tube surrounding the inner tube so as to create an annulus there between, the outer tube including a lower section having a third diameter larger than the first diameter, an upper section having a fourth diameter smaller than the third diameter but larger than the second diameter, and a converging transition section having connecting the lower section to the upper section, the outer tube terminating in an outer nozzle at a downstream end of the upper section.

Tuyere for a basic oxygen furnace

A system for melting a pelleted charge material including a furnace having a feed end configured to receive a solid pelleted charge material and a discharge end opposite the feed end configured to discharge a molten charge material and a slag, a conveyor configured to feed the pelleted charge material into the feed end of the furnace, at least one oxy-fuel burner positioned to direct heat into a melting zone near the feed end to heat and at least partially melt the pelleted charge material to form the molten charge material and slag, wherein the oxy-fuel burner uses an oxidant having at least 70% molecular oxygen, and at least one flue for exhausting burner combustion products from the furnace.

Oxy-fuel combustion system and method for melting a pelleted charge material

A method of operating a BOF bottom stir tuyere having an inner nozzle surrounded by an annular nozzle, including during a hot metal pour phase and a blow phase, flowing an inert gas through both nozzles; during a tap phase, initiating a flow of a first reactant through the inner nozzle and a flow of a second reactant through the annular nozzle, and ceasing the flow of inert gas through the nozzles, wherein the first and second reactants includes fuel and oxidant, respectively, or vice-versa, such that a flame forms as the fuel and oxidant exit the tuyere; during a slag splash phase, continuing the flows of fuel and oxidant to maintain the flame; and after ending the slag splash phase and commencement of another hot metal pour phase, initiating a flow of inert gas through both nozzles and ceasing the flows of the first and second reactants.

Bottom stirring tuyere and method for a basic oxygen furnace

An oxy-fuel burner including a central burner element having a central conduit terminating in a central nozzle and an annular conduit terminating in an annular nozzle surrounding the central conduit, the central conduit flowing a first reactant and the annular conduit flowing a second reactant; a first staging conduit spaced apart from a side of the central burner element and terminating in a first staging nozzle; a second staging conduit spaced apart from an opposite side the central burner element and terminating in a second staging nozzle; a first mechanism to apportion a flow of the second reactant into a non-zero primary flow of the second reactant directed to the annular conduit and a non-zero secondary flow of the second reactant; and a second mechanism to selectively apportion the secondary flow of the second reactant between the staging conduits; wherein one reactant is fuel and the other reactant is oxygen.

Double-staged oxy-fuel burner

A transient heating burner including at least two burner elements each including a distribution nozzle configured to flow a first fluid and an annular nozzle surrounding the distribution nozzle and configured to flow a second fluid, the burner also including a controller programmed to independently control the flow of the first fluid to each distribution nozzle such that at least one of the distribution nozzles is active and at least one of the distribution nozzles is passive, wherein flow in an active distribution nozzle is greater than an average flow to the distribution nozzles and flow in a passive distribution nozzle is less than the average flow to the distribution nozzles, wherein the first fluid contains a reactant that is one of fuel and oxidant and the second fluid contains a reactant that is the other of fuel and oxidant.

Transient heating burner and method

A burner including a central oxidant nozzle defining a central axis of the burner, and a plurality of flame holders each having an axis spaced apart from the axis of the burner, each flame holder including a high shape factor nozzle including a nozzle opening having a shape factor from about 10 to about 75, the shape factor being defined as the square of the nozzle perimeter divided by twice the nozzle cross-sectional area, and an annular nozzle surrounding the high shape factor nozzle, wherein the high shape factor nozzle is configured to be supplied with one of a fuel gas and an oxidizer gas, and the annular nozzle is configured to be supplied with the other of a fuel gas and an oxidizer gas.

Staged oxy-fuel burners and methods for using the same

A burner retraction system includes a mounting assembly having a mounting sleeve, an insertion assembly having a tubular sleeve including an insertion portion sized and shaped for insertion into the mounting sleeve and an opening therethrough, a pivot rod rigidly mounted to and extending rearwardly from the mounting plate, and a pivot assembly rigidly mounted to the insertion sleeve and including a pivot tube surrounding and coaxially rotatable about the pivot rod, one of the pivot rod and the pivot tube having a slot including a straight axially extending portion and an angled portion extending rearwardly from the straight portion at an angle &#x3b8;, and a stop pin slidably inserted into the slot in the one of the pivot rod and the pivot tube, the stop pin being secured to the other of the pivot rod and the pivot tube.

Burner retraction system

A transient heating burner including at least two burner elements each having a distribution nozzle configured to flow a fuel, and an annular nozzle surrounding the distribution nozzle and configured to flow an first oxidant, at least one staging nozzle configured to flow a second oxidant, and a controller programmed to independently control the fuel flow to each distribution nozzle such that at least one of the distribution nozzles is active and at least one of the distribution nozzles is passive, wherein an active distribution nozzle fuel flow is greater than an average fuel flow to the distribution nozzles and a passive nozzle fuel flow is less than the average fuel flow, and to control a staging ratio to be less than or equal to about 75%.

An integrated retractable burner ignition system including a burner having an outlet face and a flow passage including a front end substantially coincident with the outlet face of the burner and a gas inlet positioned rearward from the front end of the flow passage, an igniter including a high voltage electrode surrounded by an insulator and extending beyond the insulator to form a tip end of the igniter, the igniter being mounted slidably within the flow passage, an actuator connected to a rear portion of the igniter and configured to advance and retract the igniter within the flow passage, and a slidable seal between the igniter and the flow passage, the seal being positioned rearward of the gas inlet of the flow passage and frontward of the rear portion of the igniter.

Retractable ignition system

A gas flow isolation device includes a gas flow isolation valve movable from an opened condition to a closed condition. The module isolation valve in one embodiment includes a rupture disk in flow communication with a flow of gas when the module isolation valve is in an opened condition. The rupture disk ruptures when a predetermined pressure differential occurs across it causing the isolation valve to close. In one embodiment the valve is mechanically linked to the rupture disk to maintain the valve in an opened condition when the rupture disk is intact, and which permits the valve to move into a closed condition when the rupture disk ruptures. In another embodiment a crushable member maintains the valve in an open condition, and the flow of gas passed the valve upon rupturing of the rupture disk compresses the crushable member to close the isolation valve.

Module isolation devices

A cryogenic fluid distributor for turret machine tools (e.g., lathes) directs a stream of cryogenic fluid from an external, pressurized cryogen source to a working position of a machine tool to prevent overheating of the tool. Designed for easy retrofitting and synchronizing with multi-tool turret machines, the distributor allows for a &ldquo;dual-fluid&rdquo; machining capability combining a cryogenic fluid and a conventional cutting fluid (flowing via a conventional coolant system built into a given machine tool). Made of low thermal-mass, insulating polymer and metallic parts, the distributor utilizes the different thermal contraction coefficients of the parts to establish cryogenic sealing connections, which eliminates undesired turret plate cooling and assures rapid cryogen flow start-up.
