In electrophoretic media, it is advantageous to use pigment particles having a polymer chemically bonded to, or cross-linked around, the pigment particles, the polymer comprising repeating units derived from a fluorinated acrylate or fluorinated methacrylate monomer. The polymer desirably has a branched chain structure with side chains extending from a main chain. Desirably, the fluorinated acrylate or fluorinated methacrylate monomer comprises from 1 to 5 mole percent of the polymer.

Electrophoretic particles and processes for the production thereof

An electro-optic display comprises, in order, a backplane comprising a plurality of pixel electrodes; a layer of a solid electro-optic medium; a main adhesive layer; and at least one of a light-transmissive protective layer and a light-transmissive electrically-conductive layer. The electro-optic layer may be in direct contact with the backplane or separated therefrom by a thin auxiliary layer of adhesive. The main adhesive layer may be colored to provide a color filter array. An inverted front plane laminate useful in forming such a display comprises the same layers except that the backplane is replaced by a release sheet. The display combines good low temperature performance and good resolution at higher temperatures.

Components and methods for use in electro-optic displays

Prior art processes for producing protein-based capsules (for example, capsules for use in electrophoretic media) tend to be wasteful because they produce many capsules outside the desired size range, which is typically about 20 to 50 &#x3bc;m. Capsule size distribution and yields can be improved by either (a) emulsifying a water-immiscible phase in a preformed coacervate of the protein; or (b) using a limited coalescence process with colloidal alumina as the surface-active particulate material.

Preparation of capsules

A color display has continuous areas of a single color covering a plurality of sub-pixel electrodes. Each sub-pixel of a given color has sub-pixels of the same given color disposed along at least two of its adjacent edges. Each area of a single color may cover a 2&#xd7;2 array of sub-pixel electrodes. The colors used may be red/green/blue/white (RGBW), red/green/blue/yellow (RGBY), or orange/lime/purple/white.

Electro-optic displays, and processes for their production

An electrophoretic medium comprises at least one electrically charged particle dispersed posed in a fluid. The electrically charged particle comprises an inorganic black pigment having a surface area of at least about 7 m/g. Preferred pigments are magnetite and mixed metal oxides containing two or more of iron, chromium, nickel, manganese, copper and cobalt, for example copper iron manganese oxide spinel and copper chromium manganese oxide spinel. The inorganic black pigment may bear a polymer coating.

Electrophoretic particles, and processes for the production thereof

A coating of an encapsulated electrophoretic medium is formed on a substrate () by dispersing in a fluid () a plurality of electrophoretic capsules (), contacting at least a portion of a substrate () with the fluid (); and applying a potential difference between at least a part of the portion of the substrate () contacting the fluid () and a counter-electrode () in electrical contact with the fluid (), thereby causing capsules () to be deposited upon at least part of the portion of the substrate () contacting the fluid (). Patterned coatings of capsules containing different colors may be deposited in registration with electrodes using multiple capsule deposition steps. Alternatively, patterned coatings of capsules may be formed by applying a fluid form of an electrophoretic medium to a substrate, and applying a temporally varying voltage between an electrode and the substrate. The process may be repeated to allow for deposition of full color displays.

Processes for the production of electrophoretic displays

An electrophoretic medium comprises a fluid and a plurality of electrically charged particles disposed in the fluid and capable of moving therethrough on application of an electrical field to the medium. Each of the charged particles has a polymer coating comprising a first group. A polymer is dispersed in the fluid, this polymer having a plurality of second groups capable of attracting the first groups on the particles so that the polymer in the fluid forms a complex with the electrophoretic particles.
