A correlation optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) system embeds an OTDR signal in a digital data signal that is to be converted into an optical signal and transmitted across an optical fiber to a remote receiver. In particular, the digital data signal is amplitude modulated with the OTDR signal, which is based on a pseudo noise (PN) sequence, such as an M-sequence. The amplitude modulation is relatively small, for example, less than about 10% of the digital data signal's peak amplitude in an effort to limit the OTDR signal's effect on communication performance. A sequence recovery element receives reflections from the optical fiber and converts the reflections to digital samples. Each digital sample from the sequence recovery element is correlated by correlators that respectively correspond to delays and, hence, locations along the optical fiber, and accumulators accumulate the correlation values from the correlators. Based on the accumulated values, the correlation OTDR system unobtrusively identifies anomaly locations along the optical fiber while payload data is being communicated across the fiber.

Systems and methods for unobtrusively testing optical fibers

The present disclosure generally pertains to systems and methods for cancelling crosstalk in satellite access devices, such as DSLAMs. In one exemplary embodiment, a satellite DSLAM is configured to employ a vectored DSL modulation format, such as vectored VDSL, on both a customer premises (CP) side of the DSLAM and a network side of the DSLAM. For at least one tone communicated by the DSLAM, the DSLAM is configured to maintain a set of coefficients indicative of crosstalk contributions from interferers on both sides of the DSLAM. Based on such coefficients, the DSLAM is configured to cancel crosstalk that couples from one side of the DSLAM to the other.

Systems and methods for cancelling crosstalk in satellite access devices

A correlation system, such as a correlation optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) system, transmits a correlation sequence, such as an M-sequence, and measures the returns of the correlation sequence over time. The system correlates the transmitted sequence with the returns to provide correlation measurement values that respectively correspond to different distances from the point of transmission. A correlation error compensation element adjusts each correlation measurement value in order to cancel the contribution of the correlation error floor from the measurements to provide compensated measurement values that are substantially free of the effects of the correlation error floor.

A communication system adaptively cancels noise and/or interference from signals communicated through a communication channel, such as signals communicated by a telecommunication network. The system, based on a common mode signal of a received signal, generates an estimate of noise or interference within a differential mode signal of the received signal. The system then subtracts the estimate from the differential mode signal in an effort to remove noise from the differential mode signal thereby providing a differential mode signal that is substantially free of the estimated noise or interference.

The present disclosure generally pertains to systems and methods for cancelling crosstalk. A multiple input, multiple output (MIMO) system in accordance with one exemplary embodiment of the present disclosure has a plurality of receivers, which are capable of exchanging information with one another. Each receiver is coupled to a respective subscriber line and receives signals from a remote transmitter. In each path of the MIMO system, in domain crosstalk and possibly some combination of noise, alien crosstalk, and/or other interference such as RF interference, is canceled from the signal being processed. In some cases, a cancellation signal for cancelling crosstalk is based on an output of a symbol decision element, such as a slicer or decoder, thereby improving the accuracy of the cancellation signal.

A system for canceling impulse noise comprises an adaptive impulse canceler and a combiner. The adaptive impulse canceler is configured to receive a common mode component of a received signal and to detect a noise impulse in the common mode component. The impulse canceler is further configured to provide, based on the noise impulse in the common mode component, an impulse noise estimation for a differential mode component of the received signal. The combiner is configured to receive the differential mode component and the impulse noise estimation and to subtract the impulse noise estimation from the differential mode component.

A system for adaptively updating precoder taps comprises a first signal path, a second signal path, a delay mechanism, and logic. The first signal path is configured to receive encoded signals. The first signal path has a decoder that is configured to decode the encoded signals thereby recovering data originally transmitted from a remote transmitter. The delay mechanism is configured to receive and delay the encoded signals. The second signal path is connected in parallel with the first signal path and is configured to receive the encoded signals delayed by the delay mechanism. The second signal path has an adaptive filter configured to filter the encoded signals received by the second signal path based on a set of coefficients of the adaptive filter. The adaptive filter is configured to adaptively update the coefficients based on the data recovered by the first signal path. The logic is configured to adaptively generate new precoder taps based on the coefficients and to transmit the new precoder taps to a precoder.

An echo canceler for a fractionally spaced telecommunication receiver employs a signal estimator, which generates a fractionally spaced representation of a received information signal that has been subjected to Tomlinson preceding. The output of the signal estimator is differentially combined with fractionally spaced outputs of the echo canceller, so as to effectively remove the contribution of the received information signal from the echo cancellation update operation. As a result, the echo update signal will consist primarily of the residual echo and the noise from the wireline/loop. The error signal can be used at the fractional spacing rate to update all of the echo canceler coefficients, largely without interference from the much larger received information signal. This allows a higher echo canceler gain than that currently incorporated into HDSL2 echo canceler updates.

The range of digital data communication services, such as a basic rate 2B1Q ISDN channel, to customer premises located beyond the industry standard achievable range of a two-wire loop can be extended by increasing the capacity of the ISDN line code from two information bits per symbol to three information bits per symbol, so as to reduce the effective symbol rate, which is error correction encoded to an effective 4B1H line code for defining a sixteen level PAM signal waveform, and employing enhanced low signal-to-noise ratio signal processing techniques in both the transmitter and receiver to accommodate the increased insertion loss of the two-wire line resulting from its extended length. Such enhanced low signal-to-noise ratio signal processing techniques include a Tomlinson precoder in the transmitter, and an adaptive linear equalizer and a module unit in the receiver.

A bandwidth-adaptive digital phase locked loop-based clock control arrangement controls the generation of a read-out clock used for retiming digital data signal interfaced with a synchronous data channel of a communication system, in which pulse-stuffing synchronization is employed to maintain clock synchronization of the digital data signal that is not bit-synchronous with a synchronous digital data channel over which the digital data signal is transported. The bandwidth-adaptive digital phase locked loop includes a loop filter to which the error signal is applied and a phase accumulator, coupled to the output of the loop filter and being operative to stepwise adjust the read-out clock signal. The loop filter has a first scaled path that includes a first, controllably stepped gain stage, and a second scaled path that includes a second, controllably stepped gain stage coupled to a frequency accumulator. The output of the frequency accumulator and the first stepped gain stage are summed and coupled to the phase accumulator. The gain of each of the first and second gain stages is incrementally adjusted in accordance with the magnitude of the error signal.
