A data-driven information navigation system and method enable search and analysis of a set of objects or other materials by certain common attributes that characterize the materials, as well as by relationships among the materials. The invention includes several aspects of a data-driven information navigation system that employs this navigation mode. The navigation system of the present invention includes features of a knowledge base, a navigation model that defines and enables computation of a collection of navigation states, a process for computing navigation states that represent incremental refinements relative to a given navigation state, and methods of implementing the preceding features.

System and method for information retrieval from object collections with complex interrelationships

A lamp () has a cup-shaped body () with a planar bottom () with an up-standing, peripheral sidewall () defining a top (). The body () is thermally conductive and preferably is a metal such as aluminum. A reflective coating () is provided on the inside surface of the planar bottom () and side wall () for reflecting light generated by a single, side emitting LED () that is mounted on a thermally conductive, electrically insulating coupling () and is positioned substantially in the center of the planar bottom (). A lens () for directing a beam of light emitted from the LED () in a desired direction is provided and preferably is a Fresnel optic. The lens () can close the opening () as shown in FIG.or it can be formed as an integral part of bottom () or it can be added to the bottom (), as shown in FIG.. Alternatively, the lens () can be solid with the lens elements either external (FIG.) or internal (FIG.). Electrical connections () to the LED extend through the cup-shaped body ().

Traditional methods of making headlamp coils have left a portion of the coils with slightly irregular forms. These irregularities can result in defects in the ultimate beam pattern. Accommodating these defects in robust lamp and headlamp optical systems can reduce the performance that might otherwise be available. The preferred coil is therefore continuously coiled as a straight body, and carefully cut into segments. Subsequently, legs are welded to the coil segment ends. The coil is then left substantially undistorted by the manufacturing process that would otherwise normally leave a portion of the coils distorted. The method particularly enables a functional center leg coil.

Method of making a lamp coil

A solid-state light source () comprising a plurality of LED units () arrayed to emit light generally about an axis (). Each of the LED units () can comprise a number of LEDs, for example, up to five. They may all emit in a single color or multiple colors can be combined for a specific effect. A light transmissive light guide () is associated with the LED units () and has a plurality of input widows (). Each LED unit () faces a respective input window () and each window () transversely intercepts the axis () and receives light from the LED units (). The input windows () lead to a common output window () that is axially aligned with the input windows (). The light guide () has smooth sidewalls () that extend between the input windows () and the output window ().

LED headlamp system

A robust LED lamp may be assembly by forming a heat sinking sandwich with two metal heat sinks positioned around the circuit board and pinned together a heat conductive element. The assembly is positioned by pressing it into a base providing electrical connections. The robust assembly is rapidly assembled, thermally effective in draining or spreading heat from the circuit board and is readily adaptable to a variety of applications lighting. The heat sink may be decorated, colored or otherwise esthetically enhanced for consumer appreciation.

An LED lamp assembly with a substantial heat sink may be inexpensively constructed using sections of extruded metal as the heat sink. The extruded heat sink sections are trapped in latched sandwich structure assuring good thermal contact between the LED light sources and the extruded heat sink and a metal optic. The inexpensive structure may be rapidly assembled.

An advanced forward lighting system may be made with a lamp having a first filament and a second filament extending perpendicular to the first filament. The second filament is partially hidden rearward and above the first filament. A reflector forms a main beam from the first filament light and a right or left cast supplemental beam from the second filament light. The second filament's position minimizes glare, and enables a simple advanced forward lighting system from a single standard lamp fitting both right and left side reflectors.

An automotive headlamp bulb provides the two light or three filament sources in a single bulb. One source may be used to generate a standard headlamp beam, while the second source may be used to generate an augmenting side beam in response to a turning signal. A similar third filament may provide an augmenting beam to the opposite side, or farther to the same side. The single bulb eliminates the need for a second bulb, or a second reflector in an advanced headlamp system with turning light augmentation.

A light gathering module () has a body () with a first end () comprising a single light transmitting surface () and a second end () having a plurality of arms (), each arm () having an independent light gathering terminus () that is rectangular. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the first end () of the body also is rectangular. The light gathering module () can be fabricated from acrylic, plastic, glass or other suitable material and preferably has no cladding so that light output I maximized. When combined in a housing () with a projector lens () the light gathering module () provides a vehicle headlamp ().

Exterior vehicle lamp

A vehicle light assembly may be made from a lamp having a plurality of LED light sources arrayed circumferentially around the lamp; a reflector body having a reflector axis generally directed to a field to be illuminated. A plurality of reflective surfaces is formed on the front side, the respective reflective surfaces separated by one or more axially extending walls. A through passage is formed in the reflector body, sized and shaped to receive a portion of the lamp, and intersecting a planar extension of at least one of the axially extending walls separating a first reflective surface from a second reflective surface. The planar extension intersects the lamp between a first LED and a second LED whereby light form the first LED substantially shines toward the first reflective surface and the light from the second LED shines toward the second reflective surface.
