An approach is provided for determining a degree of curing of one or more ultraviolet sensitive inks. The approach involves causing, causing, at least in part, one or more ultraviolet inks to be applied to a substrate to form an image. The approach also involves causing, at least in part, the image to be exposed to ultraviolet light produced by one or more ultraviolet light sources to cause, at least in part, the one or more ultraviolet inks to be cured to form a cured image. The approach additionally involves determining a reflectance value of the cured image. The approach further involves determining a degree of cure of the cured image based, at least in part, on the reflectance value. The approach may be used to alter the degree of curing of another image applied to a substrate.

Method and apparatus for determining a degree of cure in an ultraviolet printing system

A digital curing system includes a raster scanning apparatus and a laser diode. The raster scanning apparatus scans an image with light emitted by the laser diode to digitally address the image with appropriate amounts of light to cure portions of the image as desired.

An approach is provided for monitoring and controlling the performance of an ultraviolet curing station useful in printing. The approach involves applying an image to a substrate, determining a color of the image, and exposing the image to ultraviolet light to form a curing indication image. The approach also involves determining a color of the curing indication image, comparing the color of the curing indication image to the color of the image to determine an amount of ultraviolet radiation absorbed by the curing indication image. The approach further involves determining a target amount of ultraviolet radiation absorbed by the curing indication image, determining an intensity of the ultraviolet associated with the determined amount of ultraviolet radiation absorbed by the curing indication image, and causing the amount of ultraviolet radiation absorbed by another curing indication image to be the target amount of ultraviolet radiation absorbed by selectively controlling the intensity.

A method of printing with a magnetic ink includes ejecting a plurality of magnetic ink drops onto a print medium in a print zone and applying a magnetic field to the ink drops on the print medium. The magnetic field increases a viscosity of the magnetic ink drops and reduces or eliminates absorption of the magnetic ink into a porous print medium such as paper.

Methods of treating ink on a porous substrate and methods of printing onto porous substrates are provided. A radiation curable gel ink printing system is provided that includes a radiation source configured to emit UV light having short wavelength components. The disclosed systems and methods transport a substrate having radiation curable gel ink deposited thereon to the radiation source to expose the ink to the radiation source. The exposure at the radiation source may be continuous or pulsed. The radiation source may be configured a distance away from the radiation curable gel ink deposited on the substrate. The radiation source pre-treats the radiation curable gel ink before spreading the radiation curable gel ink at a contact-leveling nip at which a contact member applies pressure to the partially cured radiation curable gel ink against the substrate. The radiation curable gel ink is preferentially cured to allow spreading of the radiation curable ink by the contact member while limiting offset of the ink onto the contact member.

A magnetic ink printer includes an ink collector to remove residual magnetic ink from a printhead face. The ink collector uses a magnetic member to produce a magnetic field that acts on the magnetic ink to remove the ink from the printhead face with little or no wiping of the printhead face. The magnetic ink is collected for possible reuse in the printhead.

Apparatus and method for evaluating printing apparatus cleaner performance

An inkjet printer has been developed that reduces the effects of show-through by depositing ink onto a cooled print medium. The inkjet printer includes a printhead and a cooler. The printhead is configured to eject ink onto an ink receiving member as the ink receiving member is transported along a portion of a media path through the inkjet printer. The cooler is positioned proximate the media path to cool the ink receiving member prior to the printhead ejecting ink onto the ink receiving member.

The conformable member substantially comprises a silicone-based elastomer having a conformability from about 20 shore A to about 10 shore A. A radiation source directs radiation to the ink-bearing side of the substrate at the nip, the radiation suitable for curing the ink on the substrate. The apparatus is particularly useful for printing onto corrugated cardboard or otherwise non-planar surfaces, since the resulting ink image is impressed uniformly onto the substrate by the conformable member without voids in the ink layer in the recesses of the non-planar surface.

Apparatus and method for detecting carrier particles in an electrophotographic device

An apparatus for loading one or more donor rolls of a developer unit, comprising a developer housing having a reservoir for a developer material, a rotatable first donor roll that delivers the toner onto a moving photoconductive member, a trim roll that receives developer material from the reservoir and delivers the developer material to a first magnetic brush roller that delivers toner to the first donor roll, and a rotatable second magnetic brush roll that receives the developer material from the first magnetic brush roll and delivers the toner to the first donor roll.
