The thickness gauging device is deactivated during shredding until the material is shredded so that rippling or flapping of the material within the feed passage will not cause false readings as to the amount of material inserted into the feed passage.

A shredding machine is disclosed for shredding sheet material such as paper documents. The machine comprises an electric cutting mechanism which is operable to shred the sheet material, and has a collection bin arranged below the cutting mechanism for collection of the resulting shreds. The collection bin is movable in a pivotal manner between a first position in which it permits operation of the cutting mechanism and collects the shreds, and a second position in which it stops operation of the cutting mechanism. The bin is configured to move from the first position to the second position in response to the weight of shreds collected in the bin and the force acting on the collected shreds by fresh shreds exiting the cutting mechanism exceeding a predetermined threshold value.

A shredding machine is disclosed which is particularly suitable for domestic or office use in shredding papers or the like. The machine comprises a feed aperture arranged above an electric cutting mechanism, the feed aperture preferably taking the form of a feed slot. The machine is characterised by the provision of an actuating element which is moveable, preferably in a pivotal manner, between a first position in which the actuating element permits energisation of the cutting mechanism, and a second position in which the actuating element prevents energisation of the cutting mechanism. The arrangement is such that the actuating element extends into the feed slot and is configured such that the part of the element extending into the feed slot will be engaged by sheet material inserted into the feed slot if the sheet material exceeds a predetermined thickness, said engagement thus being effective to move the actuating element from the first position to the second position to prevent energisation of the cutting mechanism.

A shredder arrangement comprising a housing defining a feed slot for receiving sheet material inserted by a user; a cutting mechanism for shredding the sheet material inserted through the feed slot, and a protective guard for positioning across the feed slot to prevent relatively rigid sheet material from striking the user during shredding of such sheet material, the guard defining an aperture allowing said sheet material to be inserted through the guard and into the feed slot; wherein the protective guard is moveable between a first configuration and a second configuration to symmetrically adjust the size of the aperture.

Shredder arrangement

The improvements relate to shredders for paper and the like having a shredding mechanism with an opening through which shredded material passes out of the shredding mechanism, a compactor plate located beneath the shredding mechanism and including an opening, and a base, wherein the shredder has a waste bag support mechanism of which the compactor plate forms a part. The waste bag support mechanism is secured to the underside of the shredding mechanism towards the rear thereof for pivotal movement between an operating position in which an upper part of the waste bag support mechanism is close to the underside of the shredding mechanism, and a bag removal position in which the upper part of the waste bag support mechanism is pivoted downwards at its front away from the shredding mechanism. The waste bag support mechanism includes extending runners on which the compactor plate is mounted for sliding movement between the operating position located beneath the shredding mechanism in which the opening in the compactor plate is substantially directly beneath the opening through which the shredded material passes, and the bag removal position in which the compactor plate is located forward of the shredding mechanism.
