A method for making an embedded toroidal inductor () includes forming in a ceramic substrate () a first plurality of conductive vias () radially spaced a first distance from a central axis () so as to define an inner circumference. A second plurality of conductive vias () is formed radially spaced a second distance about the central axis so as to define an outer circumference. A first plurality of conductive traces () forming an electrical connection between substantially adjacent ones of the first and second plurality of conductive vias is formed on a first surface () of the ceramic substrate. Further, a second plurality of conductive traces () forming an electrical connection between circumferentially offset ones of the first and second plurality of conductive vias is formed on a second surface of the ceramic substrate opposed from the first surface to define a three dimensional toroidal coil.

Method for forming an inductor in a ceramic substrate

An embodied step-up toroidal transformer (). The step-up toroidal transformer () includes a plurality of coil segments (). Each primary coil segment () is separately comprised of a plurality of turns of an elongated conductor coiled around a toroidal shaped core (). The plurality of primary coil segments () are collectively disposed around a circumference defined by the toroidal shaped core (). Each of the plurality of primary coil segments () is electrically connected in parallel across a first primary input terminal () and a second primary input terminal (). The step-up toroidal transformer () also includes a secondary winding () formed from a plurality of turns of a second elongated conductor coiled around the toroidal shaped core ().

A toroidal inductor () and method of forming same. The invention is intended to decrease the direct current resistance (DCR) of the toroidal inductor circuit. Thus, an increase in the quality factor (Q) of the circuit is produced. The toroidal inductor includes a coil formed from an elongated conductor extending around a core material and defining a plurality of turns. The elongated conductor is comprised of one or more coil segments. The coil segments are arranged in an alternating pattern of a first type segment () and a second type segment (). Each of the coil segments of the first type includes a plurality of elongated parallel conductors () spaced apart and electrically connected by conductive links () at predetermined intervals along their respective lengths. The coil segments of the second type are formed of a single conductor defined by a conductive via () formed in the substrate.

The body () is provided with an aperture () having a profile suitable for receiving an interconnecting conduit (). The interconnecting conduit () can be formed of the same type of ceramic material as the body (). The conduit () is defined by an outer shell () with a hollow bore () for transporting a fluid. A mating portion () of the conduit has an exterior profile that matches the profile of the aperture. Moreover, the mating portion () of the conduit () can be compression fitted within the aperture (). Conductive traces () on the conduit and the body can be electrically connected to complete the electro-fluidic interconnection.

Method for forming a transformer () in a ceramic substrate. The method can include the steps of forming at least one conductive coil () comprising a plurality of turns about an unfired ceramic toroidal core region () defined within an unfired ceramic substrate (). The method can also include the step of co-firing the unfired ceramic toroidal core region (), the unfired ceramic substrate (), and the conductive coil () to form an integral ceramic substrate structure with the conductive coil at least partially embedded therein.

A toroidal inductor, including a substrate (), a toroidal core region () defined within the substrate, and a toroidal coil including a first plurality of turns formed about the toroidal core region and a second plurality of turns formed about the toroidal core region. The second plurality of turns can define a cross sectional area () greater than a cross sectional area () defined by the first plurality of turns. The substrate and the toroidal coil can be formed in a co-firing process to form an integral substrate structure with the toroidal coil at least partially embedded therein. The first and second plurality of turns can be disposed in alternating succession. The toroidal core region can be formed of a substrate material having a permeability greater than at least one other portion of the substrate.

An electro-fluidic device may include a substrate having at least one substrate fluid passageway therein, and at least one substrate electrical conductor carried by the substrate. Moreover, an external interface may be spaced from the substrate and include at least one interface electrical conductor. The electro-fluidic device may also include at least one electro-fluidic interconnect extending between the substrate and the external interface. More particularly, the at least one electro-fluidic interconnect may include an interconnect body having at least one interconnect fluid passageway extending therethrough and connected to the at least one substrate fluid passageway, and at least one interconnect electrical conductor carried by the interconnect body. The at least one interconnect electrical conductor may connect the at least one substrate electrical conductor and the at least one interface electrical connector.
