According to embodiments of the present invention, methods, systems and computer readable media are provided, in a cognitive data processing system, for implementing a predictive analytics system that utilizes entity and non-entity information. A collection of content is processed to extract defined entities pertaining to one or more domains. Semantic relationships are determined between objects within the collection of content, wherein the objects include undefined entities. The defined entities and objects are resolved based on entity definitions and the semantic relationships to determine defined entities and undefined entities for a resulting data set. The resulting data set is processed to identify one or more relationships between a defined entity and an undefined entity.

Managing answers in a question-answering environment is disclosed. Managing answers in the question-answering environment can include sorting, based on a set of answer categories for a subject matter, a first set of answers into a first answer category and a second set of answers into a second answer category. Managing answers in the question-answering environment can include determining, using the subject matter, a first category sequence including the first answer category and the second answer category, and establishing, based on the first category sequence, a first answer sequence established from a portion of the first set of answers from the first answer category and a portion of the second set of answers from the second answer category.

Aspects of the present disclosure are directed toward managing resources in a presentation environment. Techniques are disclosed for calculating performance metrics associated with a data stream. A processing element configured to process data tuples flowing through a stream-based computing system receives data tuples via the data stream. Each of the one or more tuples is processed at the processing element, and each of the one or more tuples are associated with metadata that includes information related to the processing of the tuple by the processing element. Performance metrics are then calculated for the data stream based on the metadata associated with the one or more tuples.

Embodiments of the invention provide a method for reducing instability in a heterogeneous job plan of a stream processing application. In one embodiment, a job manager may be configured to select a job plan with the objective of minimizing the potential instability of the job plan. Each job plan may provide a directed graph connecting processing elements (both native and non-native). That is, each job plan illustrates data flow through the stream application framework. The job plan may be selected from multiple available job plans, or may be generated by replacing processing elements of a given job plan. Further, the job plan may be selected on the basis of other objectives in addition to an objective of minimizing the potential instability of the job plan, such as minimizing cost, minimizing execution time, minimizing resource usage, etc.

An embodiment of the invention provides a method of displaying a data flow, wherein a description of a data flow application to be displayed is received. The data flow application includes nodes and edges connecting the nodes, wherein the nodes represent operators and the edges represent data connections for data flowing between the operations. A reason that a user is to view the data flow and/or a user constraint on a complexity of the data flow application to be displayed is determined with a processor; and, the time required to render a display of the data flow application is estimated. A transformed representation of the data flow application is created with the processor. The transformed representation is created based upon the user reason, the user constraint, the estimated time of rendering, and/or a layout strategy. The transformed representation is displayed on a graphical user interface.

Generating layouts for graphs of data flow applications

A data stream processing system is provided that utilizes independent sites to process user-defined inquires over dynamic, continuous streams of data. A mechanism is provided for processing these inquiries over the continuous streams of data by matching new inquiries to previously submitted inquiries. The job plans containing sets of processing elements that were created for both the new inquiry and the previous inquiries are compared for consistency in input and output formatting and commonality of processing elements used. In accordance with the comparison, the new job plan, previous job plans or a combination of the new and previous job plans are used to process the new inquiry. Based on the results of processing the new inquiry, a determination is made regarding which job plans are used for future inquiries.

Methods and systems for monitoring a stream application are disclosed. The stream application is composed from a plurality of processing elements executing on one or more compute nodes. A graphical user interface display presents a user with at least a portion of an operator graph in a running stream application. The operator graph represents the plurality of processing elements, and links between processing elements, corresponding to a flow of data tuples through the stream application. A monitoring application then monitors user interactions with the presentation of the portion of the operator graph on the graphical user interface display and identifies at least a first modification to the stream application based on a processing state of the stream application and the monitored user interactions.
