Hybrid polymers for phase change ink jet inks

A cationic, water-soluble polymer is disclosed as a substrate treatment resin (i.e., coating) to improve color-fastness and adhesion of an ink-jet ink printed onto the substrate. More particularly, a 50% solids aqueous solution of a cationic acrylic resin is provided as the printed substrate treatment resin. Also disclosed is a method for preparing the invention resin.

This invention relates to novel phenolic rosin resin compositions. In particular, the invention relates to novel phenolic rosin resin compositions and dienophile-modified phenolic rosin resin compositions which exhibit properties that make them useful in formulating vehicles for lithographic printing inks and other coating applications.

A pigment-based, ink jet ink composition is disclosed which is characterized by water and accent marker resistance and by high optical density and acuity of the print. Such improvements are achieved (without loss of print quality, jetting properties, storage stability, reliability, and drying time) by adding to the ink a polymer comprised of the polymerizable half-ester of an aliphatic, nonionic surfactant, and a monomer, preferably chosen from the group of styrene, acrylic acid, and butyl acrylate.

An ink jet ink composition is disclosed comprising (a) from about 40% to about 98% of a water-based solvent system (carrier medium), (b) from about 1% to about 20% of one or more colorants, and (c) from about 0.1% to about 20% of carboxylated lignin. It has been found that ink jet ink formulations in accordance with this invention have improved water resistance properties while achieving excellent print quality, jetting properties, storage stability, reliability, and drying times.
