An apparatus includes: an elongated conductor (e.g., having a length dimension that is greater than its width dimension); an elongated resistor contacting the elongated conductor; and secondary conductors contacting the elongated resistor. The elongated resistor is positioned between the elongated conductor and the secondary conductors. A cover surrounds the elongated conductor, the elongated resistor, and the secondary conductors. The electrical resistance of the elongated resistor changes in proportion to an amount of force exerted upon the elongated resistor. The secondary conductors output electrical resistance measurements of corresponding areas of elongated resistor that the secondary conductors contact. A processor (that is operatively connected to the secondary conductors) automatically calculates the force applied to the elongated resistor based on the electrical resistance measurements output by the secondary conductors to produce different weight measurements. This allows the processor to automatically output the different weight measurements of the items applying force against the apparatus.

Methods and systems for counting vehicle wheels and axles. A strip material can be embedded in a roadway to produce a slightly raised surface. The strip can be angled at a relatively large angle, (e.g., 78 degrees) with respect to the direction of travel. The number of wheels per axle and the number of axles per vehicle can be counted as the vehicle rolls over the strip and the wheels contact the strip at different times. A signal emitted from a detection mechanism(s) associated with the strip material can be transmitted to a signal processing unit to determine the number of wheels and axle with respect to the vehicle. The vehicle wheel and axle counts can be determined by the number and grouping of signals from the detection mechanism. Such an approach provides a reliable, direct measure of the wheel and axle counts for toll charge or classification purposes.

Vehicle wheel and axle sensing method and system

A sensing method and system to protect printer print heads from substrate media contact comprising a trip wire sensor to detect and signal a printer control system that substrate media carried by transport media is positioned to strike or contact the print head. The trip wire sensor is located upstream of the print heads, a controlled distance above the transport media in the direction normal to the plane of the media, and comprises a trip wire operatively connected to at least one transducer. Substrate media exceeding the height requirements associated with the print heads contact the trip wire sensor causing the generation of an electrical signal which is received by the printer control system which then takes corrective action to prevent damage to the print heads, for example, by raising the print heads further away from the transport media and allowing the non-conforming substrate media to pass through and be purged. Also disclosed is a protective guide positioned to constrain substrate media from going over the top of the trip wire which can result in the substrate media becoming jammed in the trip wire sensor.

The method may include fluffing a stack of media with a predetermined amount of air flow, sensing sheet separation in the media stack using a bar code scanning device, determining if the sheet separation meets predetermined criteria, wherein if the sheet separation does not meet the predetermined criteria, adjusting the air flow used for fluffing the media stack.

The method may include receiving one or more multi-dimensional images of a media stack from an imaging device, the media stack including one or more media clips that each contain a plurality of media sheets, deriving a multi-dimensional feature signal from the received one or more multi-dimensional images, converting the derived multi-dimensional feature signal to a one-dimensional feature signal, estimating media clip thickness using the one-dimensional signal, estimating media sheet thickness using the estimated media clip thickness, and adjusting at least one image production device parameter based on the estimated media sheet thickness.

The errors are detected by analyzing a metric of a dash minimum response obtained from a test pattern. The test pattern contains dashes. A developer unit used in xerographic printing retains a mixture of at least a first colorant and a second colorant. An illuminator directs toward at least a portion of the mixture a first light of one color, a second light of a second color, and a third light substantially outside of a visible range. A photosensor records a first reflectance signal based on light reflected from the mixture substantially in a visible range, and a second reflectance signal based on light reflected from the mixture substantially outside a visible range. The signals can be used to maintain the mixture at the desired total color and other properties.

A lead edge and/or trail edge sheet curl sensing and constraint method and system. First and second light emitters and detector pairs are aligned such that the light beams from the first light emitter and second light emitter cross at the transport media sheet substrate path, which constitutes the path of a media sheet substrate with zero curl. A media sheet substrate with either positive or negative curl on the lead edge of the sheet substrate interrupts light beams from the first and second light emitters, as detected by first and second light detectors. A similar approach can be used to detect the trail edge curl. The time delay between the light beam interruptions is proportional to the sheet substrate curl, and the order of interruptions indicates whether the sheet substrate curl is positive or negative. A first pair and a second pair of substrate constraint rollers can also be provided in the paper path upstream and downstream of the sensing system. The roller pairs closest to the sensor are made of relatively non-deformable materials or of materials of similar elasticity so that different media are constrained in the sensor zone with the same sheet trajectory relative to the nip.

A lead edge sheet curl sensor apparatus and method are disclosed. In general, a first and a second light emitter are aligned wherein the light beams from the first light emitter and second light emitter cross. The first and second light emitter beams cross at the transport media sheet substrate path wherein the transport media sheet substrate path is the path of a media sheet substrate with zero curl. First and second light detectors are aligned to receive the light beams from the first and second light emitters. A media sheet substrate with either positive or negative curl on the lead edge of the sheet substrate interrupts light beams from first and second light emitters, as detected at first and second light detectors. The time delay between the light beam interruptions is proportional to the sheet substrate curl, and the order of interruptions indicates whether the sheet substrate curl is positive or negative.

Systems and methods are provided for determining registration errors in the cross process direction of a printer. A first straight line is obtained by detecting line centers of a first plurality of dashes in a test pattern. A second straight line is obtained by detecting a line center positions of a second plurality of dashes in the test pattern. A difference between the off-set of the first straight line and the off-set of the second straight line is used in determining registration errors.
