A surgical instrument handle operates a microsurgical instrument on a surgical instrument head by manipulation of the instrument handle. The instrument handle has an elongate center rod with a ring mounted on the rod for reciprocating movement. The ring is operatively associated with the surgical instrument head for operation of the microsurgical instrument of the head. A plurality of resilient arms extend along the length of the rod and engage against a sliding surface of the ring. The inward and outward movement of the plurality of arms reciprocates the ring on the handle rod to cause operation of the surgical instrument head.

Surgical instrument handle with adjustable actuator position

A surgical instrument handle is removably attachable to a surgical instrument head for operation of a microsurgical instrument on the head by manipulation of the instrument handle. The instrument handle has an elongate center rod with a piston mounted on the rod for reciprocating movement. The piston engages with a piston in the attached surgical instrument head for operation of the microsurgical instrument of the head. A tapered ring is mounted on the rod and engages with the piston for reciprocating the piston. A plurality of resilient arms extend along the length of the rod and engage against a sliding surface of the ring. The plurality of resilient arms are alternatively squeezed radially inwardly by the surgeon's hand and released by the surgeon's hand to allow the resilient arms to flex radially outwardly. The inward and outward movement of the plurality of arms reciprocates the piston on the handle rod to cause operation of the surgical instrument head. The radial position of the resilient arms relative to the handle is adjustable as desired by the surgeon.

An ophthalmic surgery illuminated directional laser probe has a handle and a rigid tubular tip projecting from the handle, and has an illumination optic fiber and a laser optic fiber that extend through the handle and the tip. A mechanism on the handle is operable to extend distal ends of the illumination optic fiber and the laser optic fiber from the distal end of the instrument tip, and to retract the distal ends of the illumination optic fiber and the laser optic fiber back into the interior of the tip. At least one of the distal ends of the illumination optic fiber and the laser optic fiber is held in a curved configuration. The distal ends of the illumination optic fiber and the laser optic fiber are secured to each other, whereby both the illumination optic fiber and the laser optic fiber curve into a bent configuration as the distal ends of the illumination optic fiber and the laser optic fiber are extended from the distal end of the instrument tip.

A known disposable per use surgical primary cassette is modified to avoid contamination thereof during use by aspirated fluid from a vitreous cutter connected thereto by bypassing the aspirated fluid into a receiving chamber of a relatively less expensive disposable secondary cassette, whereby during use a vacuum produced in a chamber of the primary cassette connected to the receiving chamber of the secondary cassette in turn produces a vacuum in the receiving chamber of the latter for drawing aspirated fluid from the vitreous cutter directly into the receiving chamber.

Method and apparatus for disposable aspirator cassette

A microsurgical laser probe is provided with a distal end portion of an optic fiber that projects from a tubular sleeve of the probe and can be caused to bend relative to the probe sleeve by manual manipulation of a mechanism on a handle of the probe.

Directional laser probe

An ophthalmic surgery light transmitting apparatus has an optic fiber having a flexible length with a light source connector mounted on one end of the optic fiber and the opposite end of the optic fiber being adapted to be mounted to an ophthalmic surgery instrument to provide illumination for the instrument. The cross-sectional area of the optic fiber transitions as it extends from the end connected to the light source connector to the opposite end of the optic fiber. The optic fiber transitions from a larger cross-sectional area of the optic fiber at the light source connector to a smaller cross-sectional area of the optic fiber at the opposite end.

An assembly used to adapt an external post connector, such as a BNC type connector of a microsurgical optic fiber instrument to a threaded SMA type bushing of a light source includes an adapter that can be threaded on the bushing of the light source and is also connectable to the BNC connector.

A coaxial illuminated laser endoscopic probe and active numerical aperture control apparatus and method of use, succinctly known as an illumination and laser source, capable of selectively providing illumination light and laser treatment light through a single optical fiber. The apparatus and method is especially useful during ophthalmic surgery. The present art is capable of providing the aforesaid through an optical fiber of such small size that heretofore said fiber was only useable for laser treatment light only. The present art also, with its unique optical system, allows for two illumination light outputs from a single illumination source. The apparatus utilizes a phototoxicity risk card to calibrate the system to prior art or safe illumination levels since the unique optical system provides illumination light of greater intensity than the prior art.

A microsurgical instrument used in ophthalmic surgery to remove proliferative membranes during a surgical procedure treating proliferative vitreoretinal membrane disorders and other macular diseases where the microsurgical instrument has a instrument handle, a tip, and abrasive particles attached to a scraping edge projecting beyond the tip. The microsurgical instrument may be fitted with infusion, aspiration, or illumination sources, and these sources are directed to the surgical site in proximity to the scraping edge, the abrasive particles on the edge scrape membranes to remove tissue at the surgical site. In one embodiment, the microsurgical instrument may be configured with a retractable/extendable pick where the relative stiffness of the pick and the edge may be adjusted. In another embodiment the edge may also be angularly positionable as it is retracted/extended from the microsurgical instrument.
